My 2001 Johnson 35hp blew the #2 piston. I am replacing it with an Evinrude Etec 30hp which I got a really good deal on. I have a 1985 13 Sport, anyone have experience with this motor on a Whaler 13?
You may want to compare the weights between your old and new to you engine. I have a 30 HP Mercury EFI four stroke with tilt & trim on my 1981 Sport 13. The performance is good with up to three folks aboard (all fairly robust males). The engine weight keeps the skeg and forward part of the bullet in the water at rest unless weight is added to the forward part of the 13. Hopefully the E-Tec 30 will be enough lighter that your skeg will clear the water. Having said all that I've had no problems with corrosion while using a slip in salt water.
I had one on a 1969 Sport. A fantastic combination. My only regret was that due to weight concerns I did not get the power tilt-n-trim. If I had to do it over again power TNT would be the first must-have on my list. DO NOT let the dealer mount it all the way down on the transom. Make sure they mount it so that the anti-ventilation plate is no lower than even with the keel. If you use a good stainless prop (e.g. Stiletto) you can go higher.
Thanks all. I had the motor and all new rigging installed. The weight is pretty much the same as my previous Johnson 35hp, I did get power TNT as well, but that is the only similarity so far. The Etec runs smoother, much quieter, seems faster out of the hole, starts instantly and seems to consume very little fuel. Really happy so far.
