I purchased an old lower unit and rebuilt/refinished it so I have a spare in the event of a catastrophic strike.
I created a project page so others can see what this job entails: http://www.whalercentral.com/userphot...lbum_id=67

Thanks for posting.
I am getting ready to paint my lower unit and was thinking of the same method.
You're turned out good, so now I feel better proceeding :-)

How hard was it to remove and replace the lower /prop shaft seals? Last spring I replaced the upper seals when I rebuilt my water pump and it wasn't nearly as bad as people say. I've heard the lower set is much worse.

A little challenging. However, after application of a little PB Blaster I was able to pry it out with a regular screw driver and a piece of wood to protect the prop shaft bearing carrier.

I tested the unit it today - worked flawlessly. I'm leaving it installed while I tear down and inspect my original lower unit.

It's nice when a plan comes together :-)
I'll probably paint my lower unit and prop later this week.
Looks like Wednesday may be the only boating day for the next week.
Anxious to take my boat to Florida. Lot's of nice winter days for tooling around.

Beautiful Job!
Great idea to have a spare lower unit ready to go. I wish I had a spare for my 6 hp Evinrude when I ran a water trapline, when back in my college days.
Again, a very neat job.

Yes it did come out nice. I hope the finish holds up. I'll report back after some time in use about that...
