Looking at a 1985 22 Revenge WT that has the original Johnson 235 (225?)V6 on it. Current owner says it runs like new and has receipts to show work done.

Can anyone give me the pros and cons of this motor? Is it a workhorse? Things to look for?

Thanks.

It is a good motor built on sound, proven yet simple technology. I had one on my 22 Outrage up until I sold the boat in 2007 and it was a great motor. I did do a rebuild on the motor after I had a head gasket crack and scuffed the cylinder. I used a local mechanic who has been an OMC dealer for something close to 80+ years. They know these motors well and really did a great job rebuilding it.

Have a good long standing old school OMC (now BRP) dealer do a full mechanical inspection for you. Have someone who sold and worked on these motors back in the day look at it. That should give you an honest assessment of it's condition.

One thing about the motor is, it earned it's nickname of two thirsty five for a reason.

Well, that does say something.

Thanks Jeff.

Hi All, there is a 1985 Revenge 22 WT for sale that has this motor on it and I've had my eye on it for over a year. Seller seems desperate as the asking price has been dropping like a rock. Can anyone else out there add to this thread with info regarding this motor, pros and cons?

Thanks.

Jay,
I had a 1981 2 "thirsty" 5 on my 1979 22' Revenge. It hates to slow troll. I would have to fire/wind her up occasionally to clean out the carbs when slow trawling (and also watch the fuel gauge move). I remedied that issue with a 9.9 hp 4 stroke kicker. Sometimes delicate (ornery) to cold start and when it lights up, smoke and noise. Not a quiet motor. Also drinks as much oil as gas. However, it runs close to modern motors in efficiency at 5500 rpm and gets poorer mileage as the rpm's go down. More than enough power for the 22' Revenge. "Lockeman's Hardware and Boats" in Detroit a great resource for information/parts on the motor.

I would not hesitate to buy the set up (because I already did). A solid combination. My motor was rebuilt before I purchased my boat. One "delicate" cold start morning my wife was with me. The noise and odors gave me a green light to repower (I purchased a boat with 200hp HO Etec). Sold the "parts boat" with my old 235hp Johnson and the new owner of my old gear is extremely happy. We now go out for abalone together.

Garris
