I am looking to buy a swingback seat for my 79 17' Montauk. Any recommenditions. Do they make any that is a storage box under the seat rather then a cooler that I could put a cooler in and maybe use for a gas tank?

What's wrong with the RPS you have now?
Montauks came with an RPS or the optional Leaning Post.
Here is a photo of the RPS... Reversible Pilot Seat...

The Montauk had fuel tanks underneath the RPS along with fuel tank mats.

Check out ebay. Put in Boston Whaler. Nice one there, $400 and aluminum legs. Pretty sharp. zot.

Hi Joe. When I got this Whaler It did not have a seat or a place that one might have been. It had no lights or wiring that I can see, I even took of the rub rail of to look. Even the center console looks different then most. I do like the original how much are they and can you get them. I think I sent some pictures with this reply. I am not very good with computers. Thanks again for your help. Lloyd

Lloyd,
It is hard to say what this model was originally if there are no tell tale signs of the RPS being mounted etc.
You do have an aftermarket console.
If this was ever a 1979 Montauk, it should of had the console shown here from 1977 to 1982.

Your boat would still look great with an original RPS.
The last time we heard you could still buy them new from Boston Whaler. (not cheap)
You can also check for used ones around on eBay or maybe another member here.

Thanks a lot for trying. I would pay the $150. If I could get the measurenents I think UPS OR FEDEX could handle it and I think UPS stores could package it if I had the back rest off. If they would take it I would have to get it there. If you know anybody It would be worth $50. I will make some phone calls Monday. Thanks for your trouble if you are ever up this way give me a call I live one block of Whitefish Lake MT. outside West Glacier Park. Lloyd

LLOYD, you should put an add in your local craigslist and see if there is one near you. Maybe there is and that would save the trouble of shipping.

Lloyd,
Could you post more images of your boat? The bow area of the second pictures looks unlike any 17' hull I have seen. Much more pointed in the area in front of the norman pin area.

Shipping is NOT cheap. I know. I just shipped one against my better judgement.
I will not ship an RPS again. Boxes are too hard to find for me in my area.
I tried storage companies, U-Haul in my area. Finding the right boxes for me was a major, major, deal breaker.
Shipping costs from California to Ohio via UPS standard ground.
RPS seat = $50
Seat Back, Pivot Rods, Z Legs = $70
Plus many hours running around looking for boxes spending my time and fuel.
Not worth it for me.
For those of you in big cities where boxes are laying around everywhere you go, or easily obtainable, maybe a different story.
Here is the RPS I just sold which was all new except the teak seat back.
