I am continuing to restore a '74, 13' Sport. In between glass and gel coat restoration I am working on hardware and wood issues. My stern light is believed to be the original, and I ordered a globe/lens for it from Specialty Marine. It does not fit my fixture because the diameter is too large. See the link below. I could grind it down and make it fit, but does anyone know if and where you can purchase one that will fit. I have compared this one to a Perko and it is the same size.

Sorry, I couldn't figure out how to make this address a clickable link.

You might want to talk to Sue @ Twin Cities Marine. I just restored a 1979 13 and purchased most of my parts from Sue. She will email pictures and what not until you figure out what you need.

We have many photos in our OEM Part Photos and Info link on the left sidebar that describe parts and give info on where to buy if they are still available.

It does not fit because your light pole and globe mount is a Kainer made model and the globe specialty sells is just a perko globe for the perko made stern light.

Joe's link also shows the Perko one which is incorrect globe for your light pole.

This is the globe you need. These images are from the stern light on my 1975 13 Sport. I have not been able to source a new one myself.

Jeff,

Is that original for a 1974 and 1975 models?

I remember having a Perko on my 1971 model 13'.
http://users.sisqtel.net/jkriz/Sport1...ort13.html

My 1978 Montauk also had the Perko along with my friends 1977 Montauk.

Joe,

The light in the images was the original one with my old 13 according to it's original owner. It looks just like the ones I have seen on the early 16's as well. The trumpet horn flared fixture base only fit these Kainer globes.

I am not sure when the change over in style occurred from the Kainer to the Perko. It may be worth investigating.

I have more images of the light if you want them for the parts pages.

Jeff,

dsutley has a 1974 model.
I really don't consider that an early model as my 1971 had the Perko.
As you know, the 13's started production in 1958.

More investigation is necessary as it is possible they used Perko or something else in the beginning and then Kanier, and then back to Perko.

The Kainer stern light was used until 1976 on the small Whalers.

Tom,

Why did my 1971 have the Perko?

I bought the boat used so it could have been added at a later date but I still bought the boat in 1975 when you say the Kanier was still original.
Why would the prior owner buy a Perko when Whaler didn't start using them until 1976?

Joe -- I do not own a crystal ball, so I do not know why your 1971 Sport 13 had a Perko stern light but I can think of numerous possibilities:

- Maybe the prior owner replaced the Kainer with the Perko after damaging it.

- Maybe the boat was not originally equipped with a stern light and the prior owner bought and installed a Perko light at a later date.

- Maybe the dealer who sold the boat had a Sport 13 in stock without a stern light and they installed the Perko light because the purchaser wanted a light (this sort of thing happened far more often than folks realize).

Tom,

Yes, I understand that part.
However, Whaler did not use the Perko on the 13' until 1976 as you state.
I bought my 13' in early 1975 if I remember correctly.
Why or how could someone know that Whaler was going to use the Perko in 1976 when they bought the light in 1975????

I am just curious about this and no crystal ball needed......

Why would it matter?

In 1975, a guy needs a stern light (for whatever reason) and he goes to the nearest chandlery to buy one. In the 1970s, chances are they sell Perko so that's what he buys. It was (and is) a very common stern light.

Thanks anyway Tom.
Of course it matters...
All part transitions weren't and aren't written in stone. There have been many variables as you well know.

Maybe Whaler had a short supply of Kanier during 1971 and used some Perko's ????

I will do some more research on other years to see if anyone else had a Perko light earlier than 1976.

It doesn't matter. Why would it? What is the connection?

Let me make this statement then.

Whaler used Perko Stern Lights in 1971..... I had one...

How's that?

Now, the above statement may or may not be true as I was not the original owner.
However, my 1971 Sport 13' was equipped with factory Navigation Lights.
I have added this info to the 13' Owners list and will add the information as it comes in.
Perko or Kanier Stern Light......
Look at the first entry which is my prior 13' Sport.
http://www.whalercentral.com/articles...cle_id=101

The connection is to follow the changes of different parts through the years. So maybe I am not getting my point across to you or you no longer have an interest in the different parts used.
What am I missing here? Does it matter to you when parts changed or are you missing my point?
Mine had a Perko and it may be possible that Whaler used some Perko Stern Lights in 1971 and maybe some other years.
We all know that Whaler ran short of some parts at some time during some years and they substituted other manufacturers parts.

That is exactly what I have. Have you tried Sue at Twin Cities as mentioned above?

Thanks

Joe -- You have completely misunderstood what I wrote. Let me try again.

In response to my suggestion that your 1971 Sport 13 may have had its Perko stern light added later, you wrote:

Whaler did not use the Perko on the 13' until 1976 as you state.
I bought my 13' in early 1975 if I remember correctly.
Why or how could someone know that Whaler was going to use the Perko in 1976 when they bought the light in 1975?

What does not matter is knowing what Whaler would end up using in 1976. A guy buying a stern light in 1975 is in no way limited to what may, or may not, happen in the future. How can a guy know the future? He goes to the store and buys the stern light off the shelf. It happens to be a Perko light. There is no connection to what Whaler is doing. He might have bought an Attwood stern light and then your Sport 13 would have had a Attwood stern light on it when you bought it and you might be trying to convince everybody that Whaler was using Attwood stern lights in 1971.

I am merely making a point about the possibilities, about what might have happened. I do not know how you Sport 13 was configured with from the factory and neither do you. We are merely speculating here.

What we do know without any argument is that there are no Whalers in an any factory literature shown with a Perko stern light until 1976 and every small Whaler I have ever seen that was made before 1976 that has an original stern light has had the Kainer, whose globes are very hard to come by.

From this I conclude that Whaler used Kainer stern light until 1976 and then started using Perko stern lights after that.

Who knows? Maybe Whaler ran out of Kainer stern lights one day in 1971 and had to send somebody to a chandlery to pick up a substitute and it happened to be a Perko.

Maybe your boat had a prototype Perko stern light?

The other observation I offer from my not insignificant years of Whaler study is that after 30, 40 or 50 years there are damn few Sport 13s out there that still have their original stern lights. Most have been replaced at some point.

dsutley,

No I did not try Sue because I was almost 100% certain that she did not have it. I have seen some lightpoles come up here and there on eBay. What I ended up doing was finding a NOS glass Kainer lens from a Chris Craft light pole but, I have never found a NOS plastic one like the Whaler's used.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v42...C_4872.jpg

To Tom's mention of the factory literature, in 1972 on page 8 of the accessories catalog shows the Kainer light as part of the navigation lighting package. The first time the Perko light is shown in the accessories catalog is in 1977 on page 20. In the years in between I did not see any specific mention of a manufacture of, nor image of a stern light in the accessories catalogs.
