Boston Whaler - Introduction
I purchased a Red Ritchie Explorer on eBay that was beautifully refinished. A few weeks after installing it an air bubble appeared inside. After disassembling the compass I discovered a previous diaphragm repair had been attempted using silicone...that unfortunately failed.

The Ritchie Explorer model 15 compass AKA “Red Ritchie Explorer” was manufactured by E. S. Ritchie & Sons from 1958 until circa 1981-85 and was commonly installed onto Classic Boston Whalers in the late 1950s through the early 1980s. The model 15 is becoming increasingly rare and because they are in demand by those restoring classic Boston Whaler’s they can go for as much as $200 – $300 on eBay. The model 15 was also available in a grey version (Model 15A; aka Grey Ritchie Explorer), which can usually be purchased for less.
