If it's the two-handed working of the straps that makes it tough for ya, maybe some kind of bungie like Binkie suggests. Hook and loop kind of affair? I know I've seen heavy duty bungie cords with a big rubber "pull tab" on the end. Just can't remember where. That would make it a one-handed job. (Can I say that on this forum? :o)

I like these guys' ideas for making it stock the best, if you can figure a way to make it work for you.
