The lighter the better. The hull can only go so fast before it will plane. All of the small engines will not plane the boat and will push the boat at roughly the same speed. I put a 4-stroke Yamaha 9.9 on my 17' Montauk, it was a 100 lbs. A 6 hp would have done the same with less weight.
