I have an 1983 Outrage 18 with twin 70 hp Yamahas. I am in the process of a re-wire and the question is should the batterys/battery boxes sit on the floor insde the console or should there be holes in the console floor to allow the them to sit on the deck? I have 1 battery for each motor and 1 for the electronics. I would lilke to keep them in the console.Thanks.

Most recommend cutting the console floor and having the battery tray sit on the deck.
One alternative is keeping the floor intact and adding a strut or two underneath that supports the added weight.
Personally, I think having them on the floor is preferred since it lowers them and gives you a bit more room inside.

I don't know if you are interested in other options or not but here is my opinion on battery location for different models.
As we all know, dry storage space on most Whalers is at a premium.
The only place to really store things that we want to keep dry is the console.
However, deck space on some boats is more important.
The Montauk 17' in my opinion needs the deck space.
For this model, the battery should go in the console to free up deck space.
The Outrage 18' has a splashwell that accomodates batteries very well.
For this model, the batteries should stay in the splashwell which keeps the console space for dry storage. Again, my opinion.
If you move the batteries inside the console, what are you going to use the splashwell space for?
The Outrage 20' and the 22' are basically the same as the Outrage 18' in my opinion.

My Montauk had the battery in the console. Batteries in the console can be a real pain taking them in and out.
Most my other Whalers had the batteries in the splashwell and this includes a model just like yours.

You can see that both batteries are in the splashwell. There are also 2 oilers in the splashwell.
This kept the console free for dry storage.
Just some other ideas.
Everyone has their own needs.

How were they secured in the splashwell,just screws into the hull through the tie down straps or battery boxes? My only concern is the additional weight in the stern and planning off?

Everything goes in battery boxes including the oilers.
The battery boxes use the standard footman loops and battery box hold down strap.
I had absolutely no problems planning off with my twins. Even when using a single 70hp motor.

I did mine through the floor on my Montauk. There is a pic on my project page. I will have better pics later but if you make it a tight fit and put the strap holds on the console floor it holds them tight to the deck keeps everything dry and makes a ton of extra storage space.
