'04 Johnson 50
purple wire from control box to + wire on volt meter.
Ground the other wire from volt meter.
is this correct for volt meter to register when engine is running ?

That is correct.
The purple wire has power when the key switch in ON.

Matt,
One more thing if you want the voltmeter lighted.
Attach a blue wire from your light switch (or from another lighted gauge) to the voltmeter if you want the voltmeter lighted when you turn on your navigation light switch.

Oh yea, I forgot about the lamping (+ lamp lead to bow light switch "on" lead, then ground lamp wire), Gotcha Joe, Thank's again !
