Hi,

i wonder if you guys could pass on some of your wisdom. I have just bought a 17' Montauk and the stern light is missing, however the wires are still there. Is the wiring easy to replace, do they run through conduit or are they embedded in the foam core of the boat?

any help would be appreciated.

Fraser, most of the time it is located in the rub rail.CHeck the post" replacing wires in the rubrail" BG

congratulations on your purchase. I believe you might be talking about the wires for the bow light. The wires coming out of the side of the boat, look like they may come from the foam hull. Most likely they go thru the hull to the rub rail. If you take lose the rub rail at port stern and peel it back to this area. I think you will see, what I'm talking about. This issue baffled me too, when I first got my Montauk.

The stern light wires run through the rigging tunnel to the stern.
The bow light as mentioned above goes to the stern first and then thru the hull into the rub rail and then runs forward to the bow light.

This is of course if you do indeed have a Montauk as you don't mention what year the boat is.

I'm actually a little puzzled by the boat. It says Montauk 17 on the side, however it has a center console, but looks like it had a side console previously.

I also have no way to check the wiring as the fella the had it before the guy I bought it from had replaced the rub rail with a mahogany rub rail which is screwed and glued in place, so getting access to the wiring may be an issue.

The plates on the inside if the boat are so worn I can't make out the year.

if you can wait, I'll try and post some pictures.

Well, i removed the bow light last night to see what kind of bulb it required, only to find that there are no wires running to it, it looks like when the timber rub rail was put on the previous owner did away with the wiring!!.

My dilemma is this, do i remove the timber rub rail and replace it with a rubber one or , simply unscrew it, install wiring and replace?

Will there be enough space to run additional cable for a small spotlight on the front as well?.
