Welcome BAMA Whalers. You have a great State for boating. Orange Beach area is a lot of fun, Perdido Sound etc.
I plan on a RV trip to "LA" and bringing my Montauk for some great sight seeing. Last trip was a little cool for boat but area was super.

NOTE: LA is "Lower Alabama" for you folks from up North

:-) You said a mouthful! The population of Baldwin County has doubled in the last 10 years or so. Life is good down here....

Welcome as well! I lived in that neighborhood for about 10 years in Perdidio Key area. Beautiful beaches and water. I was not converted then as i was a blow boat guy with a 27' stilletto. Used to do the annual Dolphin Island race out of the Mobile Y Club.

Now that i've seen the light, own a 22 Outrage. :)

agreed Mojack, but the fevers deep. I actually have two, an 87 and 88. Working on both, and plan on upgrading to a 80's vintage 25 outrage with Whaler drive and twins. Been doing the offshore fishing thing and need a tad bigger boat and twin motors. You have one in your area that has been for sale a while, Big C's i believe is the name. Wants to much and it doesn't have Whaler drive.

Why whaler drive? I've always heard nothing but negatives about that option.

Lower Alabama, Is that he same as the Redneck Riviera, or is that different from the Florida Panhandle coast.

Hi Binkie,
The RR is pretty much from coastal Mississippi to Port St Joe. Funny tagline :-)

I'll tell you in the last 35 years the RR has really changed from a lazy beach resort to a hot spot. Orange Beach, Perdido Key, Destin and a new International Airport coming to Panama City Beach.

The old RR will be the new International South Beach and will see folks visiting from the "Real Riviera" spending money and enjoying the emerald waters.

I tell you, the last thing we need along the coast is more condos. Call me old-fashioned but I LIKE the sleepy areas of the coast. With development comes pollution among other negatives....

AND traffic! I'm with you, mojack. How about a little "beachview" roadway instead of staring at the backside of a line of condos. Whoever convinced the planning/zoning board years ago that this was a good development concept could sell ketchup popsicles to a lady in white gloves.

New one on me mojack. I'm sure it makes it a little more difficult to fish around, but the tradeoff is (at least in my opinion) great additional storage in the stern, and i really like the looks. You can also put a few more horses on as well.

Hey jr and mlw,
I haven't logged in in a while. Glad to see some fellow whaler guys around here. LuLu's is quite a ride for me but we go to Big Daddy's every now and then. Feel free to send me a PM or email.

Is it getting too cold for a Rendezvous at LuLu's?

too cold for me! Big Daddy's is definately closer and just as much fun to me. I can't believe this little thread has over 1,000 views! Who are all of the rest of the whaler guys out there (around here)?

Who are all these other guys? Well, I can only speak for myself:

Generalized type of Whaler guy: Northeast, winterized a month ago, and already counting the days 'til Spring. The only good thing about the winter layoff is shopping for new toys for next year.

Specifically: Former Navy guy who fondly remembers two tours in the Pensacola area, 1984-1986 as a student and 1989-1992 as an instructor.

Routinely fished for Blues from the rock jetty on the west side of the Perdido Bay Cut in Orange Beach. Trained H-1 transition pilots at Bronson Field up the bay.

Really liked the "old" Gulf Coast, haven't been back since early 1992, & really hope it hasn't become too overrun w/condos!

Ihorn, sadly enough it has been overrun with condos. The old Florida has gone by the wayside.

OK...Sorry I haven't checked back in, as I have been wrapped up in football for quite some time. This Big Daddy's; is that the place on the Fairhope Pier? I really don't know where the heck that is. But I'm game. I vote some time after the SuperBowl maybe even in the spring so everyone can have a chance to see the any updates. It's pretty obvious that we don't regularly check this forum. Maybe March? It's starting to warm up in late March. Probably need to run the motors by then anyway. By the way...WHO DAT!

Big Daddy's is up in Fish River just before you get to the Co Rd 32 bridge (Fish River is the primary river emptying into Weeks Bay). I'm thinking March is still a bit cold for me but perhaps late March, early April. BSW started this thread though, let's see what he has to say.

OK so just follow Fish River til I see it; easy enough for me. Is there a marked channel in Weeks Bay? Just my opinion on the whole condo thing...Yeah there are a lot of them here but, this is still truely a special place to live and boat. The best thing to happen us boaters was hurricanes Ivan and Katrina. It cut Dauphin Island in half leaving the western half all to us boaters. The only thing you have to worry about bothering you are the birds. They are pretty darn territorial. Man, we had a blast heading down there, anchoring off the sound side, the wifies hanging out and laying out on the beach, the guys wading out and catching HUGE specks. *sigh* I hate the winter time.

BSW hasn't checked back in but maybe we can all get together the week after Easter at Big Daddy's, The Cold Hole or LuLu's. I'm going to start a thread just to see if there would be any interest.
