Does anyone have an idea of what is the best size prop. for a 1998 40hp 2 stroke merc. The motor is on a 1967 13 ft. whaler. At the moment there is a prop. from a 35hp and it seems to over rev the motor.

Thanks,
Marc

Had the exact same problem with my daughters 13 footer, 40 merc with 35Merc prop. She went up two inches with the pitch. Worked out good. Do you have a tach?

My motor is a 2001 mercury 2-stroke on the 2001 13 footer. I have a 10-3/8" diameter 14 pitch prop. I just bought a new prop from Tracker Marine awhile back. It was about $130. If you're interested, I might be willing to part with my spare prop. It has some dings in it but is definitely in decent working shape. I'd like to get $50 for it so I can afford a stainless steel someday.

This is the prop that Whaler sent with the boat new. It is great for the boat with 2 adults on board. 30+ MPH at 5000 RPM. Max speed really drops off when you get to maximum weight capacity. It gets difficult to get on plane with that motor when at full weight.

Thanks for the help. I am running a 14 now. I may just have to go up
to a 15 or 16. What size is your motor? How many grooves on the motor splin? 13?

My prop is 13 spline. I don't think you have a 10-3/8" diameter prop.. Even if you do, I haven't seen a Mercury aluminum prop that is that diameter and higher than 14 pitch. The prop I have is the 1/8" larger than the one used for the factory test on your boat hull and motor. see: http://www.whaler.com/rec/pdfs/performance/3.pdf

It is a good all around prop for the boat. Good luck.
