If your like me, you don't see any reason to go replace the GPS because it no longer saves your settings. You open it up to see how hard the battery is to replace.
On the Garmin GPSMAP 180, the battery is soldered to the circuit board.
Not a bad idea since it gets bounced around on a boat a lot, but not the
easiest for replacing it on a regular basis. I opened up the GPS and measured between the contacts to confirm the size for any new holder. Distance between the contacts on the Garamin 180 is 1.2 inches.
I found a coin cell holder that looks like it should be able to take some bouncing around, the battery locks into place. The holder is available from
Mouser Electronics part number 122-2820-GR
Spec Sheet
Once I opened up the case it was easy to unsolder the old battery and solder the new one in place. Don't forget to make note of the positive side so you can orient the new holder correctly.

Too bad all the links you show above are now dead and no one can view them.
I always hate to see this happen as this thread is no longer of much use.
Just another reason why we prefer to have photos uploaded to WhalerCentral so this type of thing doesn't happen.

Gee Joe, I guess you have never had a server crash? I have them if you would like me to upload them someplace on WC so you don't rely on my home server that's fine with me, just tell me where? Otherwise they will be back when I finish putting all the subsites on my home server.
In the 2 years since I wrote this only one person actually needed this info and they emailed me because they couldn't access my site.
restored subsite, now that didn't take very long

This is a great thread. Many things, including electronic items, are all too disposable these days and any kind of info like this which helps people prolong the life of an otherwise fine piece of equipment and keep it out of the landfill is most excellent in my book!

Didn't realize it was a server crash of yours. And just when I wanted to view it again.
Only one person? I bet there were more in the background that never asked for any more info.
An article is always another good choice. That way something of this nature can be uploaded to WhalerCentral via the article submit link on the left sidebar. I would like to see more people submit articles. I know you have submitted several in the past which many people view.
Maybe we need to let people know they can create articles by submitting them using the links on the left sidebar along with news and photos.

I should update my count because as I went thru my email a second person sent me a mail so that's 2 in 2 years. Not to say others haven't viewed the article and gotten some benefit, just counting those that contacted me directly.
I agree Joe, I think more folks should write this stuff. I expect I will have 2 or 3 out of the 13 restore project. I see possible articles on the following, refoaming a 13, repairing non-skid with molds and gelcoat and building a floating dock for a 13 footer.
