Im finally repowering my 1989 montauk 17 original evinrude. I want a yamaha 90 but cant seem to get a date as to when engines will be available. my dealer says suzuki has a few problems here and there. i guess ill be leaning towards a honda 90. does anyone have a newer honda 90 on this hull?
before i buy new, does anyone have any advice finding an new-old model year engine of any brand? any further points to consider?
Thanks!

Inventory issues are still a mess. No one will have any leftovers.

Call dealers within 2-3 hours of you and see who has what in stock.

All brands have a decent 90hp.

Suzuki is the least expensive, Honda is the most.

Prices are still quite high so shop dealers with detailed quotes. Expect 13-16K for basic install, rigging.

Good to hear that confirmed. Thanks Phil. Don't see many on here with Honda motors. Any recommendations on prop and mounting height? Seems like the Honda SS 3-blade is sufficient and 2 holes up is the way to go.

Two holes up is the top bolt in the 3rd hole down from the top to start. Once you finish break in, you can try 3 holes up.

As for props, Montauk owners with a BF90 recommend these props:

13.25 x 15 Solas SS
13.25 x 17 Solas aluminum

Remember prop size only applies to the specific make and model listed.
WOT with this engine is 6300. Running solo and light your target is 6150 or higher.

I ended up finding a new 2022 Yamaha 90 in Florida and had it shipped to my dealer. Got it rigged etc and took possession last week. Finished out first 2 hours of break in yesterday.
Testing a 15 aluminum prop before ordering stainless.
As I'm now able to go for WOT, what rpms and speed should I look for?
Thanks!

Well done you.

The Honda BF 90 and Yamaha F90 have different gear ratios and WOT rpm ranges. The prop suggestions above are not applicable.

For a Montauk 17 with an F90, owners have tested and recommended these props:

13-1/3 x 18 Yamaha Talon (Performance)
13 x 19 Yamaha Painted SS
13 x 19 Powertech SCD
13.25 x 17” Stiletto Advantage

Engine needs to be mounted 2 holes up, top bolt in the 3rd hole down from the top.

I would get through break in before you start noting performance.

Your target should be 5800-6000 at 43-44 mph running solo and light.
