Can anyone tell me if the wooden anchor well hatch cover is bolted down or just sits inside the opening?

It was not bolted.

Many owners add a bungie cord to the underside.

In my 1979 Montauk, the teak bow locker cover is hinged (two narrow chromed hinges) at the front edge, and lifts straight up. This is the factory original installation. No other hardware is installed.

This is for the trapezoidal shaped cover, used on the 1977 and later "smirked" hulls. For a 1974 model, using the original "smirkless" hull, the cover is rectangular and is unattached.
