Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Re-power with a lightly used 2013 Yamaha F40?

I have the chance to purchase a used (60 hours) 2013 F40 4 stroke from a neighbor. Just motor and prop, he's keeping controls etc. Was wondering what you all thought about its weight (~216lbs depending on the model) for a 13 foot 1969 full splashwell converted super sport. Im currently running a 1985 2 stroke 50 horse merc. Wanting to re-power for power tilt/trim, less noise/pollution, and dependability.

Do these motors have any well known problems? Previous owner had this on a 16' boat and he now wants to water ski behind it so he needs something a bit larger. If anyone runs one, would love to get your thoughts!

Thanks

I'm installing a 2002 F40 on a 1988 13 ft Sport this week. The key issue with these motors (not sure if it applies to a 2013) is the jets easily plug up causing poor performance. I replaced both jets on the carbs with larger ones after I did a extensive ultrasonic cleaning of the carbs. There's a 2 part Youtube video that explains the process in great detail and it's really helpful and correct.

The 3 cylinder 40HP Merc, used on some of the 13 ft Whalers weighs 204 lbs. I did a 1982 13 ft Sport with the 40HP 3 cyl Merc and it ran really well, if that helps.

The 2013 model is fuel injected.

Thats a big weight difference.

If you want to see how the added weight will be, launch the boat and add jugs of water (8 lbs/gallon) or other weights to the rear and observe.

You can help offset the stern weight bias by shifting the fuel tank to under the forward seat (if raised) and battery under driver.

Thanks everyone. I'll see about the water jugs thats a brilliant idea. The 50 merc I have now weighs about 185 lbs so adding 31 lbs or so to the transom is not ideal. My battery is stuck in the stern for now based on how I wired it, but I can move the fuel tank up under the forward thwart seat I think. Was thinking about putting a 12 gal tank under there anyways.
