Hi, I've been looking for photos of the Classic hull Outrage 18 SDL and cant find but a few online. If you have any pictures of the set up, can you please post them? I'm interested in building a fore deck like it for a 22. I dont think there is anything with this setup in that hull size, so something will have to be built.

Thanks!
Rob

Rob,

I'm curious about the designation "SDL"? And the special foredeck it has?

Never available in the US Market.

Here is an older photo of an Italian dealer advertisement.

Many Europeans like the "Sun Deck Lounge" option on many of their boats.

Ahhh - got it now. Thanks. That SDL is pretty neat.

If you are looking for ideas on how to copy this, you might want to glance at the later variant of the Outrage 18, the 19 Outrage II. The bow area was changed to a flat deck with two side-by-side lockers, rather than a single recessed center locker with stepped up sides. This might give you some ideas.

My 19 Outrage II has a custom (made by Finnegan) platform that extends the flat bow deck aft to, and around, the center console. With storage underneath. It is very similar to the casting platforms that were available for the Montauk models. So with this extension, I essentially have the SDL. It's a nice bit of handiwork.

I wish I could show you a photo, but I have never been successful at posting photos here.

This website (linked below) seems to have some photos of an Outrage 25 with a factory SDL (including a head in the locker underneath it!)

No US boats like that.

See each and every US catalog from 1958 until now.

I bought an Outrage 18 new in 1986, and fully researched all factory Outrage 18 offerings and accessories. There is no such boat ever manufactured by Whaler called an Outrage 18 "SDL"

It must be some homemade aftermarket offering, perhaps by a Whaler dealership, who put their own homemade name or designation on a conventional Outrage 18, using some locally manufactured accessory. I have seen a few situations where this marketing ploy was used.

As far as I know, i was the first person to design a special insert forward deck for an Outrage 18 back in 1990. I made mine out of solid 4/4 teak, and it was done to level out the bow deck for two people to cruise and sleep aboard the boat, under a full Mills canvas system. See photo. The deck also extends along both sides of the console for additional foot room, not visible in the photo.

I also know of a few people who observed this deck in person, and then outfitted their own boats with something along the same idea. One was an Outrage 18 (a boat since parted out and sold due to accident damage), and one was an Outrage 22, still in beautiful condition.

And since JRP has contributed to this discussion, I should also say I designed the teak deck extenting the bow area in his boat, which was previously owned by a good friend and cruising companion.

All of these bow platform extentions actually began with the 1961 Sakonnet, and then later with the 1971 Outrage 21 (Ribside), which was standard equipment on the Outrage I and Outrage II models. When I bought mine, this deck was missing, so I had to design and build a new one for my boat, also made from 4/4 teak. See photos.

Thanks everyone for the help. Yes. I know there arent any that were sold in the US. I was hoping that people may have come across photos in order to save time or provide input as I build my own. So, please keep posting photos if you can.

Thanks again!

The 1974 Outrage 21 I purchased several years ago has a fibergless extension, perhaps an option, I'm not sure.

I have a sun deck on my 1983 Outrage. It was an aftermarket add on from the 80's. Underneath the pad is a marine grade plywood platform with stainless hinges in the front. The pads are on the base and around the bow. you can see it in the 5th and 8th photos on my personal page. Sorry I don't have a better view.

Nice factory looking material on both the cushion and the bolsters.

I would hate to try and replace that now.

This slideshow has some decent photos of the "SDL" feature on a euro Outrage 18:
