Hi Dave:

The correct model number for your 1997 Evinrude 150 would be E150EXEUC. Yes, since your motor has a Modular Wiring System (also known as MWS) then your harness would include a neutral safety kill switch/ground.

First, the Ignition Switch has a 6-pin connector, including the yellow wire, which is the kill ground.

The 3 wires purple, black and white with tan stripe go to the trim/tilt gauge.

The 3 wires purple, black and gray (not likely used) is for a standard tachometer.

The 2 pin connector with purple and tan with blue stripe wires goes to the warning horn.

You will also have an 8 pin connector that goes to the system check tachometer or system check gauge.

A 3 pin connector with red and white stripe wire, blue with white stripe wire, and green with white stripe wire goes to the trim switch.

I recommend you get yourself an OMC maintenance and repair manual if you wish to DIY - repair the motor. That will make it much easier to maintain, diagnose, and repair.
