Did excess varnish fill the wood channel where the vinyl window gaskets seats into the windshield frame? If so, you want to sand the channels smooth with 220 grit. That will make it easier to install the new vinyl window gasket. Then spray a water and soap solution in a spray bottle into the channel with the glass in place as you begin to install the gasket. Pull on a length of the vinyl to stretch it a bit which reduces the thickness as you hand squeeze it into the channel. Sometimes I use a wood block to push the vinyl into place but be careful not to scratch the glass. It usually takes me 20 minutes to do the first pane; 10 minutes for the second, and 5 minutes each for the last two panes. I never cut the end length before I reach the full circumference. Use a sharp razor to cut the vinyl gasket precisely at the end. The begin/end point of the vinyl gasket is always center top of the window pane.
