Recently has my motor serviced and the mechanic suggested that I think about updating the motor, not that there was anything wrong, it is 30 years old. Went to the dealer who told me tat it wa unwise to repower a 1988 hull and that I should consider selling it and upgrading everything with a 2018 Montauk because it being a wiser investment and the 2018 will ride far better than my 1988. Any thought or comments?

If the dealer gets your money, he is a good salesman.
You make the decision to buy a new boat or not.
It is your money, not his.

Well, maybe they don't make as much maintaining them....
Keep feeding that engine clean fuel with the correct oil and run it as far as it will go, you have nothing to lose. Start saving for a re power, it will be needed at some point. If your hull is in good shape and dry, there's no reason not to upgrade the engine when appropriate.
We love the new engine on ours and yes, it was an investment. We also get a lot of compliments on our classic. I'm biased but I find the new versions to be pretty sterile looking. For what it's worth, I saw an in this months Soundings that a new version of the 170 Montauk with a 90 HP Mercury and a trailer lists for $30,700.00. I'm still way ahead money wise even after re powering...

You have a classic Boston Whaler Montauk that is highly prized. Your mech and dealer hate you because you don't need anything from them other than yearly maintenance.
wiser investment
A new Montauk will run your north of $$33,000
The wiser investment is to keep what you have, maintain your motor and chuckle at the money you saved.
-or - update your current motor for $9,000.
Worse case -
Buy a pre-owned 2010-2012 model for $18-20k

I don't know how old you are or how much you use your boat but the boat and engine will last a very, very long time with reasonable maintenance and care, That 3 cylinder Yamaha is one of the best engines ever built and the classic Montauk is one of the best hulls every built.
Save your money and continue to enjoy a great boat and great engine.
