I seem to remember seeing a post about BW owner painting hull below waterline with anti fouling paint , the same color as original gel coat ( I think it was Tom Clark ) I am looking for that discussion. I am looking to paint over exitisting antifoulent paint ( cosmetic purposes only ) . I am tired of scrapping, sanding, and polishing ! Lol

Are you going to paint over the anti-fouling paint with more anti-fouling paint or are you looking for a top side paint that will stick to the anti-fouling paint?

If you want to change the color of the anti-fouling paint get on the web and find the site for Petit or any other marine paint vendor.

If Petit Hydrocoat is available in white I can strongly recommend it if there are no compatibility issues. It works extremely well on our trailered Sport 13. Read the specs and instructions before buying. West Marine also makes a similar paint for a little less money. It's probably rebranded Petit paint.

Spend some time on the Petit site. With the information there you should get a good idea whether or not the Hydrocoat will cover your existing paint successfully.

I suspected the paint on our 13 was a vinyl based paint. It didn't chalk so that was a clue and it was hard, so two clues. The Hydrocoat applied easily and clean up was a snap. The 13 is so small that I bought quart cans to avoid waste.

i was interested in color matching the bottom paint to my 1973 21ft Outrage. However, the Petit representative i spoke with advised against tinting the ablative paints. He claimed that the process to create a "unique color" somehow rendered the antifouling properties of the paint less effective. Not sure if that is true or not. I went with white and have been very happy with the appearance. I would recommend talking to the paint manufacturer directly to confirm if it is possible to color the paint.

I did a 1981 13ft Sport and it had a similar issue - old bottom paint and the buyer wanted the bottom to be the same as the hull color. The hull was sanded and buffed out, bringing back the original color. I wound up using Pettit Ultima Eco in white and it matched the hull color very closely. Might be something to look at...

I picked up a 1989 Montauk this past fall. It has blue antifoulibg paint on it which is chipping off in places revealing a dark(black?) paint, under that is the gel coat. The boat was previously used in salt water, but I will be primarily using it in fresh water and it will be trailered when not in use. What is the easiest way to remove the antifoulibg paint(seems to chip off easily), and what is the dark paint I am seeing under it? Is that some sort of primer? I do not plan on using antifouling paint going forward as it will not be used in salt water nor stored in water.
