The original placement of the battery in a Nauset 16 was left rear corner. I personally prefer the battery there because it is near to the navlight wiring and is not subjected to the harsher conditions when placed forward under the console. You will know best your boat and the conditions for how you use it so it is fine to install the battery in the console. The interior console base was designed to accommodate two 12 gallon fuel tanks. You will lose fuel tank storage capacity if you install a battery in the console.
