Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Battery Position for 1961 Nauset

The mechanic wants to put the new battery for the 90 horse two stroke Yamaha back by the motor well. I feel it should go under the console.
Question: What is the original/best place for the battery?
Question 2: I replaced the console with some Meranti, but could not find ribbon stripped like the old piece. The stuff I used is Aquatech Meranti 1/2" marine ply the tone is different than the gorgeous wood in the original windshield. any thoughts on where I can lay my hands on the right wood for console top?

The original placement of the battery in a Nauset 16 was left rear corner. I personally prefer the battery there because it is near to the navlight wiring and is not subjected to the harsher conditions when placed forward under the console. You will know best your boat and the conditions for how you use it so it is fine to install the battery in the console. The interior console base was designed to accommodate two 12 gallon fuel tanks. You will lose fuel tank storage capacity if you install a battery in the console.

I suggest you call Bob Latourelle at 978-837-8808. He can cut you a piece of ribbon stripe sapele to the specification you need and ship it to you.

The gas tanks store in the console.. the mechanic wants to position the battery next to the gas tank? Genius. Put it in the stern where it belongs unless you move the gas tanks under the pilot seat.

Thanks Weatherly! I will definitely call Bob Latourelle and get that sapele from him! The dimensions are 38 3/8"x18 1/4" and 1/2" thick.
The windshield had been replaced before. So, the original holes for the 8 ea,#12 @ 1-1/2" bronze screws are all "wallered-out" and not usable without some rehab. However, there are twelve newer holes to attach the windshield. I will have to use those, for now.
I did download the 39 page document for the Nauset specs. and found it very interesting.
Thanks for the help!

Outboard mechanic and Weatherly are right. The batteries belong in one of the stern "pockets" located on either side of the motor well.
The batteries will last longer in the stern because the ride is best for them there, makes sense. I can build a deck over them.
Mechanic suggested that no one should stand so far back in the stern, anyhow. He said, the weight of a guy there would bring water over the ass-end.
The previous owner put a twenty gallon tank under the drivers seat. This seat looks like a newer model from a Montauk, perhaps.

Tested the new console top for position in the boat. The Hydrotech Meranti looks OK. Comments?

I like how the new piece looks. You are moving right along with the refit and should be on the water very soon!

Thanks Weatherly! I have four more days to put on four more coats of Flagship and then the outboard and binnacle will be installed, I'm jazzed. Grandkids, hold-on!
