Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Trailer question for classic whaler

I have a 1966 Nauset 16, now a Westport, because I built a back seat from blueprints found on this site. I rebuilt a trailer, adding cross members and keel rollers. My question is how long should the carpeted bunks be? I can fit 4' or 8' bunks on the trailer.
Thanks in advance for your input,
Mike Lenord

Mine are 8' long. The more comfortable the boat is on the trailer going down the road the better. I added all the cross members and keel rollers that I could fit on the trailer. 99% of the boats weight is on the rollers, the bunks keep the boat balanced. Overkill? Maybe, but I haven't heard any complaints from the boat.

Mine are 6 feet long, oriented vertically. My 1985 Cox trailer came this way.

I have 8' bunks and keel rollers for my 1961 Nauset's trailer.

With a good keel roller setup, all you need are 4' bunks. Their only purpose is to keep the boat stable side to side, to eliminate rocking on the trailer. My trailer came with 2 x 4 x 5' bunks, but 4's would have worked just as well.
