Hey Guys,
I recently purchased a 2001 Montauk 17' (older hull design) and I'm trying to get the best placement for a Raymarine Dragonfly transducer. Its a little high I think where its placed now, but I'm specifically wondering how far away from center it should be. Anyone found a sweet spot? Right now it loses depth reading at 18mph. I think I can do better than that!

Looks like it is mounted too high. About 1/3 to 1/4 should be below the bottom of the boat. Also, tilt it a little so the site line off the bottom of the transducer hits the boat 2/3 up. It goes on the downhill stroke side of the motor a far away from water agitation as possible.

Thanks for the feedback Garris! Gonna lower it for sure, any placement suggestions for this specific hull design or just as far starboard on the waterline as possible?

Others with Montauks may have better placement spots. The key is to keep it away from agitation. Trim tabs would affect the placement. You try to have the bottom of the transducer as parallel to the water as possible without lowering it too far down. The angle of the bottom of the boat sometimes makes you "split the difference" of its angle to the water so not too much of the transducer is submerged below the bottom of the boat. I think you will be happy with the Dragonfly. Locals here like it. It is a self contained unit so it does not communicate/talk with any other electronics. I am repeating the suggestions of our local boat electronics expert (Fred Fritz). My days chatting with him make me feel like I am back in school having discussions with a most talented professor.

Mine is 8 inches from the center of the drain plug to the center of the transducer and the transducer is level with the bottom of the boat at the front and the back of the transducer is tilted 1/8 inch lower than the front of the transducer, it is mounted on the starboard side. It will hold the bottom at 35 mph. Mine is a Garmin EchoMap 73sv Chirp with a GT52 HW transducer and the transducer was mounted as per Garmin instructions.

Alan, great description of the angle I was trying to describe. With the back of the transducer down if you ran a straight edge off the bottom it would hit the front portion of the hull. Finding the correct shims or the locking washers may leave you close. I do not recall which is which but I have two transducers and one of them could only be shimmed.

Thought you might like to see this change in transducer location on my MT 170 transom. New sweet spot is on the right. Old spot on the left with old ducer hanging. Previous spot resulted in too many air bubbles being trapped under the strake. Notice how about 1/2 to 2/3rds of the ducer's body is below the plane of the bottom of boat. Hope this helps! Will
