Hey Whaler Folks:

I have a 150 Super Sport. Pretty small boat. I'm feeling patriotic and would like to fly the US Flag. I am in Lake Erie, so I am supposed to fly the US Flag, not the Yacht Ensign, because I could end up in Canadian waters.

My question: on such a small boat, how best to display the flag?

I know the point of honor for a boat is center of the stern above the transom. I have an outboard motor there. I think I can recall seeing a flagpole mounted on an outboard, but it was a long time ago.

What is the best place for such a small boat?

It can be tricky finding a good spot to mount a flagstaff on a small boat. I would suggest the you read the relevant chapter in Chapmans, which will provide guidance on correct sizing and placement consistent with nautical tradition. But more than likely you wil have to get creative.

Bill, does your boat have a stern light that installs into a socket? If so, perhaps you could make a pole to fit into that socket.

My boat has a "stern" light which fits into a socket on my side console, actually ahead and slightly to the starboard of the steering wheel. That could be a location, according to one article.

Another said I could use the center of the front rail or bow, which is where many will fly their club pennant. It is permissible, though not preferred.

I'll keep at it, and report back.

I am sure you have already found a solution by now, but I just saw this thread and thought I would share what I did in case it helps. In order to minimize the number of poles sticking out of the gunnels on my 1961 Sport 13, I simply converted the stern light into a dual-purpose stern light/flag pole. It's a small flag, but it gets the job done. You can see my current setup in the bottom photo on my personal page. For me, this is the most practical option on a small boat, but it probably isn't consistent with marine standards. Please share what you ended up doing. Thanks.

I too just saw your post so you probably have a solution at hand.

I think it is wonderful to fly the flag. I use the stern navigation light socket to hold my flag pole which is a simple wood dowel with screw eyes to which I have used cable ties to connect the flag's grommet.

Not sure if I have upset the karma of the universe, but I mounted my yacht ensign on my stern light pole with two zip ties.
