Had this on the left side of the transom facing in on my 1972 Nauset

Looks like it was for the steering cable.

Correct, Joe. Today's outboards anchor the steering cable by running through the tilt tube

My 1974 Outrage 21 had the same thing attached through hull to the starboard transom. I had only the triangular piece. Still have no clue what it was for.

I just removed mine from my 1974 Nauset. It held the steering cable in place. Newer motors have a different offset and you have to run the cable through the motor to have adequate cable travel in both directions. If not for that I would still be using it!
