Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Looking at a 1985 17' Montauk tomorrow. Advice?

I've read all the threads I can find about buying a used Montauk, including the checklist listed in one of the threads. This boat has a Yamaha 90 two stroke, trailer and a few accessories. I plan to use it in the Neuse River and Pamlico Sound of NC, along with many of the creeks. Mostly my 8 year old grandson and myself.

I know to look for soft spots in the floors and weakness in the transom, anything else in particular? Any advice is appreciated and if there is a specific forum sub topic I should be in, please tell me.

Thank you.

Tom

If you've exhausted this site and read all you can about what to look for....you'll be fine. Just know your budget and be sure it's "the one". You'll know when you see it if it's been taken care of. And don't fret if it isn't the one, Montauks come around a lot.

Good luck.

Make sure that the outboard checks out ok.

I was offered an amazing condition 1988 Montauk hull for $2,500. It needed some cosmetic work (teak and cushions). The real problem was that it needed to be repowered - which would cost an additional $12,000.

Thanks to both of you for your responses. I looked at the boat today and it didn't speak to me loud enough. The seller and I couldn't agree on a price, so I am continuing to look. He has my offer if he changes his mind.

Again, thank you both.

You're welcome. As I said, you'll know when it's the right one!
