Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: converting a side mount control to run a top mount.

The 1999 Yamaha C60 that I will be using on my (now center console) 15 FT. Whaler came with side mount control. Selling the side mount and finding a top mount with its wiring harness would be the logical thing to do but as of now no luck, I have a top mount 2007 Honda control that the Yamaha dealer said that he thought would work for shifting and throttle (after changing shifting and throttle ends) and I'm thinking I can use the side control wiring harness. I have a new Yamaha key starter, I hope I can wire into the harness, and mount on the dash. the Honda top mount control has a wire hanging off for the tilt and trim button, but at this time i have no clue as to hook up the nuetral control.
All ideas are welcome.

Before you swap controllers, check the "throw" of each handle action to make sure that the action is the same so that there is no binding of either unit.

I never thought of that. I'll check that out.

Bill, I expect to be able to post some pictures next week. Everything is complete now, except I don't have a shifter or wiring harness. I haven't been able to get any solid info on the possibility of converting my side shifter wiring harness for use with the Honda top mount shifter box. I think the best thing to do is to just buy a new Yamaha top mount shifter and wiring harness, and sell the used side shifter and the Honda top mount on Ebay.

BTW I really like what you have done to your 15 footer, and what is the fuel filter you are using?

Thom
I checked the throw and the action of the Yamaha side control against the Honda top mount control and they are not even similar. So now its on to new Yamaha top mount control and a new wiring harness.
the old ones go on Ebay.

Rich,
Smart choice, I once opened up a side mount control for a 2004 9.9 kicker in an effort to shorten the cable to get rid of a loop. It was all I could manage to get the wiring back in without damaging. I believe with modern motors, that unless you get a factory adapter a new control is in order. Your projects are beautiful.

Glad you were able to check this out before you invested time and coin in trying a conversion.

Thanks Rich. We look forward to seeing the pictures. The fuel filter is a Tohatsu Unikas fuel/water separater. The nice thing about it is that you can visually see if there is water present in the glass bowl. Here is some more info on the unit: http://www.defender.com/product3.jsp?...id=1212742

I couldn't find any good used stuff, and even if I did, and put it all together, and it didn't work, I wouldn't know whether the parts were faulty or my work was faulty. Used parts aren't that cheap anyway. So today I ordered all new parts, a Yamaha single control binnicle box, a Panel switch assembly, and a 16' main harness. $460. List from the dealer is $618 with tax. It all just plugs together. I'll use the shift and throttle cables from the side mount box, they're in good shape.

Bill, thanks for the info on the fuel filter.
