In addition to Blacksmithdog's advice.

It is highly recommended you purchase a inexpensive plastic scraper. Don't use metal. It looks identical to a metal putty knife but made of plastic. This tool will not damage your gelcoat.

A hairdryer on high works too without getting anything too hot.

Work on one corner of a letter/number at a time and slowly work the scraper and heat.

Once all the decals are off, use the Goo B Gone to remove the adhesive.

Be warned there may be a slight color variation from the sun oxidation the hull. This can be reduced/eliminated by detailing the boat.
