I recently bought a 2007 150 Sport and need to change the registration numbers and letters on the side of the boat. I don't want to damage the gel-coat. How can I take these older plastic letters and numbers off? Heat? Chemical solvent?

I've had good luck with a heat gun on it's lower setting, then rub the heck out of it with Goo B Gone.

In addition to Blacksmithdog's advice.
It is highly recommended you purchase a inexpensive
plastic scraper. Don't use metal. It looks identical to a metal putty knife but made of plastic. This tool will not damage your gelcoat.

A hairdryer on high works too without getting anything too hot.
Work on one corner of a letter/number at a time and slowly work the scraper and heat.
Once all the decals are off, use the Goo B Gone to remove the adhesive.
Be warned there may be a slight color variation from the sun oxidation the hull. This can be reduced/eliminated by detailing the boat.

I just used Goof Offf, worked great with the plastic scraper. I didn't see any different in gel coat., mike

Just for the heck of it, try some wd-40. It will work well on masking tape or tape residue. Give it a try. 3m makes an adhesive remover.

All of the above will work, assuming the letter / number scheme match just neatly place the new over the old.
