As I understand, when using the built in fitting you are not suposed to run the motor.
But I think it is better to use a flushing sleeve which is connected to the water hose and put on the water intake on the gearcase.
This way you will be sure the water will run through all channels in the engine. Also when running the engine warm the thermostate will open. That's the way I do it to be sure.

A late reply on this, but I have been using the hose adapter after running the motor each time, as it seems to not only flush the engine, but also he lower unit. Water pours from all over the place, including the "pee valve" up top, slots on the lower unit, out the prop, etc.

Also, I have been running the engine for a couple minutes in the beginning of the flush, then I turn it off and continue for flush for a couple more. In total, I flush for 5-7 minutes. Seems like I am doing it right, but I won't know for sure for 10 or 15 years ;)
