I was interested in retrofitting a pair of the docking lights on my hull, 1979 22' Revenge, after I saw them on a larger Whaler (thouht they looked cool). Decided against it for a couple of reasons. Silly to cut a hole in my hull, contacted Coast Guard (was at the Marina at the time) and he stated the use of them underway was illegal. Subpart C Lights and Shapes, 83.20 Application (Rule 20) "....sunset to sunrise...." "....during such times no other lights shall be exhibited, except such lights as can be mistaken for lights specified in these rules...". Should only be used when docking. One dark morning when leaving port for for fishing, the boat behind me had some sort of spot light that blinded me, reflected on the rule, not only illegal but rude.
