Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: 1995 Outrage 17' Nav Light

Hi all,
I am new to this forum, not new to Whalers. My father picked up a 1995 17-Foot Outrage today. It is missing the starboard side Nav Light. The previous owner put some kind of patched-cover over the cowling and sealed it into place. I told my father I would get online to see if anyone knows where to find a replacement. At this point not sure if it's just a bulb and cover lens, or what. All my internet searches turn up is that this is a hard to find part.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Jamie

(corrected to Nav Light for clarity)

Check out the Perko navigation lights online.
You should probably see the name Perko on your light somewhere.

Thanks, but all I saw were bow navigation lights (red and green). I need what looks like the car headlight mounted in the hull beneath the bow. There are two, one on each side of the keel.
I need the missing one in the photo below, on the Starboard side.

Just saw there were several pages. Sorry, looking through them now.

Were those original? I have never seen those on any Whaler under 25' before as original equipment. I did not know they were optional on the smaller boats.

I don't know. I've only owned a 1971 Katama and a 1980 Montauk. My dad picked this up this morning and didn't ask about the lights. He's in Louisiana and I am in Texas so my information is very limited at the moment.

I would call them docking lights. I don't know if it's illegal to use them at night while running but it should be. They will ruin the night vision of everyone on your boat and any other boat near you. People using their spot light at night, swinging it around blinding everyone within a mile should be ticketed. And their spot light confiscated. Anyway, there should be some manufacturer info somewhere on the light.

They are called docking lights, and I know you can still get them. I have seen them advertised. I am sure you can find exact replacements with a search for docking lights.

I use mine at night and in the fog on my Whaler 27 and I have never gotten any complaints from other boaters about them. I use a couple of MUCH brighter LED lights on the Outrage 18 at night. I think it is important for me to be able to see clearly in order to navigate in a safe way for my passengers, as well as myself.

I once was in the water in the ICW with a really bad undertow for over 1hr and could not swim out of it. I was there as a result of a brother-in-law hitting a floating timber just below the surface with the lower unit of the boat motor. I was sitting in the bow seat with my back to the wind, and the force of the sudden stop actually broke the back of the seat I was in and sent me tumbling straight over the bow. I was pulled from the water and revived just before death and have now lived another 30 years.

Pardon me, but I will continue to use lights as I see fit to insure both my own and my passengers safety as I navigate. I do not boat in Michigan at all anymore, and I rarely boat in Florida, certainly not near Fort Myers so your "night vision" should be safe. I know my own "night vision" is VASTLY improved as a result of the lighting :)

OK, I see now.

I have only seen them on larger Whalers however I guess any dealer or owner could have installed them.
They are called "Flush-Mount Forward Docking Lights".

Below is a photo from the 1989 Catalog Options for 27' Whalers.

I was interested in retrofitting a pair of the docking lights on my hull, 1979 22' Revenge, after I saw them on a larger Whaler (thouht they looked cool). Decided against it for a couple of reasons. Silly to cut a hole in my hull, contacted Coast Guard (was at the Marina at the time) and he stated the use of them underway was illegal. Subpart C Lights and Shapes, 83.20 Application (Rule 20) "....sunset to sunrise...." "....during such times no other lights shall be exhibited, except such lights as can be mistaken for lights specified in these rules...". Should only be used when docking. One dark morning when leaving port for for fishing, the boat behind me had some sort of spot light that blinded me, reflected on the rule, not only illegal but rude.

Jamie -

Welcome your Dad to the Outrage 17 I club, it is a small, but proud club since it was a unique boat that was only offered for 5 years. I owned one for 7 years and it was great.

I personally agree with Garris (don't ever cut into a Whaler unless you have to).

I used a hand held spot from the console when in the dark. Less overhead and more flexibility.

Make sure your Dad checks the seal on the light enclosure where they enter the hull. There should be a good seam of caulk. Don't want water getting in there.

Looks like the #95002 is the replacement 12V light bulb in White.

Looks like these lights were a joint effort between 3 or 4 companies.

Yes, that's what I see, too. I see at West Marine they have the 95002 and one other heavy duty model similar. Checking the original part now.

Thanks again!

Looks like you will have the best lighted 17' Whaler this side of Timbuktu.

I will keep an eye out for your lighted boat here in California.

Silent, I'm sorry I got you upset. I have always tried to maintain my night vision so I can see what's happening on all points around my boat, not where my headlights are pointing. Safety is my primary concern. There is a reason they call them docking lights and not driving lights.

Thanks Joe,
I got married in NorCal last July. My wife's from Santa Rosa so we got married on a little farm in Sebastopol. We love to visit there now that we're both in Texas. Your 18 Outrage sure is pretty.

Take care,
Jamie

gchuba,
technically it was Freestone, just up the road from Noah's, near the General Store just before the S-curve. Any chance you know a guy named Omar who works on bikes? :-)

Jamie, I have tilted an elbow with Omar at the "Barley and Hops" on occasion. He also helped Gerard's one evening cooking Paella when Gerard could not make it. Small world in a very small town. The Freestone Bakery made the "destination" list in one of the elite magazines.

Jamie, I saw Omar last night at the Farmers Market. Please feel free to email me from my profile because we are getting off the subject. I did mention our emails but did not have your name.
