Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Maybe a SW fla get together

I was just watching the Black Max Video, and saw another post for an additional vid, and thought, dang, great water, nice keg, and would be a good time in Fla.

I'm way down here in Corpus Christi, and we have had some great meets, but it has pettered out in the last few years. So, what about a meet in SW Fla, Pensacola area, where the water is great (lived there 10 years), and draw on the La, ALA, TX, and of course FLA folks for a major get it on Whaler meet up?

I would be more then willing to trailer my boat that way, for a long weekend get to-gether, and i'm sure some of the states i didn't mention, who have members, might be interested in traveling to it as well. I purchased my 25 from Venice Fla and trailered it here, which is a heck of a lot further!

Its without boat, a 12 hour trip for me, but hey, could hook up with JVC, CES and maybe some others to caravan that way!

Great idea Duf - That entire stretch from Pensacola, Ft Walton & Denton is beautiful. That would be fun.

At the very least - we are ready for a hang in your neck of the woods!

Just for my clarification - isnt the area your are referencing NW Florida? I thought SW Florida was like Fort Meyers down to the Everglades or something like that. Maybe I am wrong?

and I also noticed a "North East Florida" Thread, and could these be easily joined potentially? It might be a good idea to get Nick from GCBWOA involved, cause he brings a party!

Ya, Pensacola area would be a NW Florida location.

Sounds enticing Duf!

Yes, sorry for the confusion, intended south, and all the way west, Pensacola area, Ft Walton area. Its a beautiful area with lots of white sand, and sheltered waters. Many many areas to beach a boat, and very accessable to folks from ALA, LA , etc. Without my boat, i've made the trip from Corpus in 12 hours, so add a couple for a tow, so easily doable in a day.

OK, P'cola. All I need is the date, time and ramp.

Ok, its early, but seems to be some pretty good interest, and i think after more Whaler folks read this thread, should add to the list. Let me do some investigating on ramp availablility. My choice would be on NAS Pensacola, which has a nice ramp, and direct access to the intercostal (you should be able to google it and check out the area), and is directly across from the opening to the Gulf. Just not sure what the Navy will say about having a group of Whalers, no base stickers etc, but i will find out. Just outside the Marina, is an opening on what we used to call Admirals Island, which divided the intercostal. A lot may have changed from the Hurricanes they had some years ago, i know one of them hit the Pensacola area pretty hard.

If someone local to Pensacola area reads this post and wants to chime in, would be appreciated, as i will be trying to work this long distance.

Plenty of Hotels in the area, and if your x-military, they have, or at least had cabannas right on the beach.

The NAS ramp is very nice and parking is excellent. However, on weekends it can be horrifically busy. The nearby Big Lagoon State Park may be an option. It has a ramp but I've never used it.

If an active duty or retired local is willing to sponsor a group I imagine the XO would sign up for use of the ramp, especially on a weekday.

The Naval Air Museum is a great visit and just down the road from the ramp. It's also free.

The duplex cabins are generally booked well in advance but it's worth a try. An option is the Navy Lodge across from the Museum for those with a Military ID.

We did one in 2004 and I think 2006 or 2008. We started at Pirates Cove both times, then ran east back to big lagoon. Really anywhere west of the land cut is good. Depending on the date and our schedule, count us and the 15 as a maybe.

Is that the Pirates Cove Marina on Amica Bay near Elberta, AL?

yes on Roberts Bayou. There is a nice ramp in the park up the bayou and one at Pirates Cove. Also one at Bear Point and one at the west end of Cotton Bayou.

Excellent inputs guys, appreciate it. I'll contact the Navy, as i am retired Navy, and am presently active DOD and see what the Navy is willing to do. Very familiar with Pirates cove, spent many days there, and used to drop in on my way to the dolphin insland race, with my 27 stelletto, before i came to Corpus and went from blow boat to a Whaler!

Cotton Bayou ramp is under renovation as of my last look yesterday on the way home to Spanish Fort. Boggy Point ramp at the Eastern tip of Marina Drive/Street/Way/?? in Orange Beach, AL is also excellent. It's within spitting (almost) distance from Perdido Pass. It, too, is a zoo on weekends.

Duf,

How are things looking in regards to a "get together" in the P'cola area?

hey Butch, from what i've seen, considering the area, and relative relation to Fla, ALA, La, and even to a lesser extent Tx, not huge. We've had several here in Corpus, and the most we've seen was 6 or 7 i believe. Unless its looking like a big turn out, don't plan on trailering my boat 14 or so hours.

Duf,

OK, got it. Too bad the idea didn't generate more interest. I was looking forward to meeting more Whaler owners. I loved Corpus when I was a boy but it's too far for me to tow these days so I completely understand.

Perhaps another time.

Thanks for your efforts!

Duf, got your call last week...major apologies for not returning it. I will call you later this afternoon.

The drive from North Dallas Texas to P=cola is about 12 hours....just a bit too far for us to drive for a weekend. We are trying to plan to go to Corpus on the July 26-28, 2013 weekend though!
