Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: What Did You Do For Your Whaler Today?

So what did you do to your whaler today? It seems I can't walk by the boat without thinking of doing something on it. Yesterday I applied non-slip to the areas on the trailer that can be walked on. It's getting tough though, only 32 out there today. Damn, I'd rather be boating.

Adding a folding fulton swing away hitch to my trailer is the best recent upgrade I did, I can launch the boat alot easier and not get my tires anywhere near the water line.

Also, upgraded to a Garmin 541s combo gps and ff. Still need to take this out and use it.

Sebastian, tks for chiming in..good 4 u with the trailer upgrade..sounds great..as for today, I picked up some pc-11 waterproof, impermeable epoxy ..marine grade..I think I may fill those transom screwholes with it if it warms up enough to work on it..may have to wait til spring otherwise.

Ernesto here...Just caught your thread. After procrastinating for some time I finally dug in literally. I'm in the process of turning my 15 sport into a center console. Today I dug a hole under where the console is going to receive a gas tank. By dropping the tank down as low as possible I'll still have room inside the console for stuff. I want to get the deck as clean as I can. Got my Whaler in July and have been working on it pretty steady since. Hope to have it under way this spring. So yeah I understand Whaler Fever.

Ernesto ! nice ! youre gonna love that thing with a center conssole..I can remember deciding on our boat being a center console..which I never had..then i was thinking ..CENTERED..theres more to it than just standing in the mid ship..its awesome..good 4 u

Hauled out for a little while while this nor'easter blows over. Looking forward to some fishing and/or scalloping this weekend.

Replaced the on-deck fuel line last weekend. The inner liner of the hose had completely separated and clogged the thing up. Not really sure why that happened, but i'm glad it didn't cause any major problems on the water.

Added some stainless steel cup holders to the console and gunwales... Such a simple thing, I was always spilling my beer.

Entertained research in getting a "new" steering wheel for my Classic.
Would be nice to hear of some sources of used OEM parts.

Last week and into this week in fits-and-starts I've removed the failed keel guard and have applied 2 coats of "Gorrilla Grip" as the new keel protection. I'm considering adding a 3rd coat. I too have added this material to areas of the trailer that are walked on.

Yep, realizing I pulled the trigger a bit early....when I called to have it wrapped I thought I'd be waiting a few weeks...but no, they could do it right away. Great.

At my wife's behest, I did put a deposit on a slip for next season, also researched bottom paint (Hydrocoat), and started my boating Christmas list.

when I stepped into the garage today, I saw the three brass drain tubes that I had installed in the transom of my custom 15. They made me smile. It was a simple thing to do with all the advice available on WC but has given quite a sense of accomplishment.

99% finished with my total professional refit of 1987 Montauk. Stripped; sanded + 5 coats varnish like glass, custom teak rear bench seat, 3 coats of Awlgrip paint in & out including inside ctr console, stripped old wire to all new, wrapped & zip tight, new black plex-e-glass gauge panels, new blue LED courtsey console lights, new VHF, new bilge pump, moved battery to center console & add batt switch, new hull ID plate on stern, new USCG capasity plate, new raised BW grafics from BW, new Sunbrella bimini. So what 1% missing? I will place a teak laminate in floor of center console to finish!
I was at the marine store with the boat just being finished and on way to launch when one guy came in the store yelling "Who's BW"? No answer, so again, "Who's BW"? That's mine....Damm that is the prettiest classic whaler ever seen :-) Got my stuff going to SUV and BW seeing 3 guys walking around the boat saying "look" and "Wow". When I approach they said, "How old? You did this? (no)." On the water twice with many heads turned and fingers pointing :-))
I can't seem to get pixs posted :-(

is this a Gorilla Glue product?? There is also a company that makes a Gorilla product for surf boards. I'm curious as I'm thinking about a keel guard for next season...

Boats pulled while i deal with the insurance company on a blown piston, but am using the time to have custom fit brackets made for the boat lift (old ones were bending due to the weight of twins), which i just recieved. Will install them hopefully this weekend, and drop the boat back in. Will be motoring with one engine till the boat shows, and i repower :)

Duff, all i can say is ..quite the rig..you really take care of it..like most of the whaler cult...that you can still be under power while the other engine awaits work is a great thing..just having my boat out of the water for 30 day warranty work was such a pita...especially in the norths short season..the kicker ..2 engines..no downtime..

Thanks Bob, but i'm guessing you looked at my personnal page, which is showing my 22 i had just purchased and was just dropping her in the water for the first time to put on the lift and roll up the sleeves. Its how i got introduced to "bartenders friend" by Joe to clean up all the teak oil on the decks by the prior owner. Have a 25 now with Whaler Drive and twin 200's, so i need to update my personnal page to show the latest, and probably lastest! :)

Maintenance activites this past weekend:

1. Took the Outrage 18 over to McClain Trailers to have new axle hub assemblies installed. Going to have the spare tire with an extra hub mounted on the trailer as well. Noticed that one bunk is about 1-1/2" higher than the other. Going to have that leveled.

2. Pulled the Nauset 16 out of the garage and made an appointment next weekend with Holmes Wooden Boats to do a little maintenance on her mahogany.

Here on the Gulf Coast we don't really have an off season; shrink wrap is for the fish I catch and freeze! ; )

I travel between Florida and Michigan and when in Florida I use a boat ramp at Punta Rassa at the foot of the causeway to Sanibel Island. Because I usually fish alone during the week when there is not much of a crowd at the ramp, I always wait till I can get the exreme left hand lane so when I back down I can release the winch hook and let the boat go back till it sits in the water between the guide posts. Then I take the line and step up onto the dock and walk the boat back away from the ramp. When coming back in I try to get the same spot so that when I get the boat on the trailer I can jump off onto the dock then walk around and hook up the winch, hoping the boat doesn't slide back into the water. I'm trying to figure a way to put a walkway on the side of the trailer so I can get off over the side instead of having to jump over to the dock. That way I can keep a hand on the boat to keep it from sliding back on the trailer. I'm 70 this year and it's getting harder to do that jump. So anyway, that's what i'm doing. Thinking.

Wing..congrats on boating at 70..I am planning on it too...i might not be able to do the acrobat stuff then..like stepping over the bow and standing on winch setup to get down on front of trailer ..instead of going in the water. !! might have to play it safe and put on the water shoes..good luk

I had Sailfish Marina in Port Salerno, Florida drop my 17' Guardian in the water today, and I went for a dive along the Jetty In the St' Lucie Inlet. Dried off and then trolled an hour or sol. Went into Shrimpers and had a cold beer. I've had so many Whalers that its hard to count them, and my days of worrying about which model I have, original parts, or how pretty the boat iooks are long gone. I just want to spend time on the water.

Bob: Thanks for your comment. I really love and trust these hulls, and I'm very partial to the 17's. I had an Alert a few years back and did the ICW cruise three years in a row heading south each October. Twice from NY to FL and once from the Chesapeake Bay down into Florida. Perfect little boats to cruise with, and the highlight of my cruising was taking the 17 over to the Bahamas for a week last year from Jupiter. Amazing sights and an even more amazing feeling crossing the Stream

Continuing with the original thread, I just took the jackplate off Carom, my SuperSport 15, and reinstalled the motor and drove her up to Maine to put her to bed in the garage for the winter. I am planning do some customization of the jackplate, including some minor shaping to remove unneeded metal and having it anodized. I found a local place that does heavy Teflon anodizing, which I think will be better than the raw aluminum in salt water.

Merry Christmas to all!

Well, in the spirit of the original thread, I have been pretty busy with the whaler this winter. After seeing the boat on the new trailer, I decided I really ought to restore the boat! That trailer started making the boat look bad!

I have decided to remove all the bottom paint and go to 100% gelcoat hull, I have been told that I can improve my MPG by as much as 3 mpg...I am not really expecting that drastic of a change, but every MPG increase will add range offshore, so I am excited to see what this will do. As a side benefit to stripping and re-gelcoating the hull, I am having all the nicks and scratches from hard use removed. All the screw holes from old transducers and miscellaneous equipment will be completely re-fiberglassed and gelcoated.

I have decided to remove all the teak and completely refinish it as well as remove and inspect the console, and replace any interior wood showing signs of rot. The entire console will be rewired with marine wiring and new fuse blocks using all heat shrinked terminals. My switches all still work, but I will ensure they are completely refurbished as well. I am really tired of the rat's nest of wiring that has built up over the years with the addition and subtraction of electronics and electrical devices, and it has gotten so bad I would be in trouble tracing the wiring for a component in a pinch if something quit working. It took me 3 days to find a lighting short last month!

I have installed a Garmin autopilot on the boat, as well as a CHIRP sounder with the dual range Airmar transducer. At this point, I have WAY more $$$ in this boat than I could ever get out of it, so I figure, What the Heck? Might as well go for broke and have it all like I want it. I got new cushions for the leaning post from the OEM manufacturer after a lot of research. I highly recommend this manufacturer if anyone has a need for an aftermarket leaning post, Spacemaker in Florida. My boat was originally ordered without a post or seat and this was installed by the dealer in 1986 and it has lasted all this time with only minimal wear even with exposure to the elements.

I have purchased a 1985 Johnson 9.9 for a kicker and I am having it installed also. The old Lenco troll n tabs (original) is long since obsolete, and there is no way to get the electric non-digital motors it used anymore, so I am going to modify the trimtabs by removing the motor mounts from them completely. I really like the trimtabs when trolling in moderate seas, so I intend to keep them as they still work perfectly. I am installing a new dual binnacle mount controller to use with the kicker. My original Tach went out last September and I was forced to use a more modern looking tach as a replacement, so now I guess I will go ahead and replace the rest of the gauges with modern matches. I think the handwriting is on the wall for them to go out soon also, they are all the same age as the tach. The new engine controls will also have to be modern as I have been unable to find a suitable vintage one.

I am still unsure whether or not I really want to re-gelcoat the interior of the boat...it is really not all that bad. There are plenty of the tiny spiderweb type cracks, but I like having the original whaler checkering on the no-skid surfaces and I am afraid I will have to lose that if I have it redone.

I expect to have all work completed by March...we shall see! I know I am getting cabin fever already from not fishing since my last trip in October. I certainly am looking forward to getting back on the water soon!

Removed motor in preperation for weighing hull and repairing transom. Also, the helm will be moved forward 1 foot to help the classic 15' hull accept the 50hp four stroke Honda that makes it porpoise so badly.

Nida bond poured, transom re gelcoated to match, drain tubes installed, console trimmed to fit it's forward position, and refitted with a new piece of plywood glassed in so the steering wheel could be moved over to the right side. This would go quicker in the summer, resin don't like to kick when it's 36 degrees, so there is a lot of down time.

Yea it's nice, everyone else is tearing up the crappie and shellcracker, and I'm stuck on the hard. Bob, it seems if I have a defect in my hull. I don't know if it was factory or caused by sitting on a trailer the wrong way. I bought it last year knowing it porpoised but had no idea it was going to be such an undertaking.

Coming down the home stretch here, hating life not having my Whaler in the lift, and its routinely in the 70's. Boats in Victoria waiting for the motors to arrive (twin 150 Merc 4 Strokes) which will arrive Tuesday. I also upgraded my GPS/Fishfinder to a HDS-8 so heading offshore to my favorite fishing spot (55 miles offshore) will not be an issue. But should have pulled the teak before dropping off the boat and have been re-working it during the down time.
Next project is re-creating a super leaning post with a friend of mine who is a boat builder. I'm trying to convince him there would actually be a market for replications of the original, which i think there would be. I'd be first in line!

Talked to West Marine and Bob's machine shop.
Shipping seems to be a costly problem for this side of the continent.

Don't overlook the TH Marine Atlas Jacker! I chose that over the others, design is awesome.

Today...machined harpoon tips into the stainless rub rail, machined a heatsink for underwater light mount, and bought new optima blue tops. Sanded, and buffed hull all day.

Me too. Redoing the brightwork with WestSystem and then varnish. West system is not easy to sand.

- New fuel line, primer bulb and batteries.
- Installed an OEM bilge pump switch and wiring.
- Replaced the old pump and switch, and removed excess old wiring.
- New capacity decal and hull id plate.

Now I just need to finish a custom teak gauge frame and hook the gauges back up. I'm making that to cover some rough cuts from when the previous owner installed the speedometer and tachometer.

Not more then 2-3 weeks to go before the first outing of the season.

Launching this evening to do a trailer swap, planning a short cruiser while we're in. Have been spending the last week readying the trailer. Also previously instaled a stereo, new compass, drink holders, "tater bin" on back side of console door, moved battery with new switch and main breaker etc.

You have to be a contortionist to get the wiring clean inside the console but now that it is done it was well worth it.
I hope I'll learn the 100's of features on the radio in a couple of weeks or (I'll ask the kids)

Bit the bullet and drilled into the bottom to see how much water was in the hull. Really a matter of curiosity, and my suspicions were confirmed. What do you know, there is water in my hull, but it only drips out, not gushing out. It has dripped for over a day, but overall, I am happy it didn't gush. I plan on filling the hole first with a little gorilla glue to absorb the remaining moisture followed by a fiberglass driveway marker and then two part epoxy. It will never be seen under the bottom paint.

I visited my Outrage today at the Whaler hospital. I took several photos of it completely stripped of motor, console, T-Top, and rigging...it was a solemn occasion indeed. Currently, there is a 27 WA WD in the bay getting bottom work from some damage done to it when it was left in a sling that was too small for too long, but that Whaler oughta be out of my way by next week, then we flip the Outrage and start removing the bottom paint and getting all the surfaces prepped for new gelcoat. The inside decks will be next.

I got the new teak cooler cleats and 94 qt cooler at the shop, also got the new teak replacement rod holders today. All the teak in the console has been removed, and it appears to be in a bit worse condition than I thought it was going to be in. Most of the teak is splitting, and the dowels used to hold the frames together are disintegrated. I am looking for new teak now...sure hope I can find it premade, if not, I will have to use the old as patterns for new fabrication.

Boy, that 27 WA WD sure is a BIG boat...I gotta quit thinkin' about that thing...I need to get this Outrage complete so I can get back on the water! Yeah, you know your a Whaler addict when you see a WD in need of a lot of work and you ask the glass guy if he could give your number to the owner in case he wants to sell it:)

I scored a Morse MT-2 Control and a complete OEM OMC wiring harness from this site that will be installed this week in my Newport 17. Both are currently functional but the binnacle is rather pitted and the safety start lockout is intermittent. Boat is not wrapped but is uncovered in the barn while the bottom paint is removed and replaced with gelcoat. Will be polishing the gel coat I installed last Fall right after I strip the last of the bottom paint next week! Motivated even if it's sleeting today!

Trailer work. No boat or motor work, yet.

Fabricated replacement, dual-pivoting bunk brackets for the Carlise trailer in order to retain the auto-adjusting feature of the keel rollers and bunks. Made and covered new bunks.

This past weekend pulled the hubs, cleaned them and installed new bearings, races and seals. Cleaned and polished the spindles, and cleaned out the Reliable Sure-Lube passages. Reinstalled hubs, fresh grease and topped it all off with new Reliable Sure-Lube caps and new tires.

Nothing new on the boat other than a good waxing. I did however replace the trailer’s wheel bearings, races and seals. I went to my local Napa dealer for 1- 1/16 “bearings. I wanted the pack that comes with everything . They had (2) versions to choose from. One was considered light duty which was rated up to 3000 pounds. Never knew this existed. The other was twice as much and had no rating. Well I did the math and decided even with a safety factor added in, I wasn’t over 3000 pounds. I decided a lesser grade bearing was not worth the risk and spent the extra money.

Replaced trim seals on my 1999 70 hp Yamaha. I made a tool for removing the trim ram seal caps out of a socket that worked well. I probably will not need it again for more than a few years so if anyone wants to borrow it, let me know.

Also I found out through research on these forums that a Yamaha, around my year and horsepower will not send power to the coil until a certain rpm parameter is met, I think it is 330 rpm. My motor would be an embarrassment to crank on the ramp but once on the water would crank like a new one the rest of the day. I found my battery to be the culprit. At the ramp, the boat has set for days or weeks without being run, so the battery hasn't has a charge put to it, but run it across the harbor, and it gets a good charging. So if you having the same problem, check your battery and cables, because they will cause the starter to not spin fast enough, therefore no spark, and no crank.

Took our 1984 18 ft Outrage out on seatrials today after a 1 1/2 yr restoration. Mostly due to $$$$$$. I got our 130 hp E-tec up to 38 mph (GPS) @ 5700 rpm. I had throttle left but was (@ the time) worried I would over rev the motor and water conditions. Now I understand the throttle over rev would have prevented that. But the boat ran great, there was a good chop on the water due to gusting wind and a lot of boat traffic due to an aircraft carrier coming home (thank you to all of our military). I had a 1980 17 ft Montauk and I have to say for what I do, the Outrabe is my final boat. It's a dream. Thanks to Whaler Cental for all the knowledge I gleamed here and to those who responded to my questions.

I made sure my Whaler 27 will NEVER get lost! Both my Whalers will know where they are at all times:)

Purchased and had shipped the last 2 components of my upgraded electronics, one more Garmin 6212 MFD and a XM radio module.

I am removing the 2 outdated Lowrance MFD's, a Simrad autopilot, Icom radio, and Raymarine dome radar system with a separate display on the helm.
The replacement system is the 2 Garmin 6212's side by side with a Vision chip in one of them. Only one Vision chip is required, as both chartplotters can use it over the network. Next is the GSD 26 CHIRP sounder with an Airmar TM 265 LH CHIRP transducer. A GMR™ 404 xHD Open Array Radar, GHP™ 10 Marine Autopilot System, VHF-200 Radio and the XM weather module will complete the networked package. Will be using the NMEA 2000 network to have all components working together. I had some of this installed on the Outrage 18 before the refit, but it was just too much for the small engine electrical system. This package should make a really nice setup for Offshore in the Gulf Of Mexico.

The Outrage 18 got a new GPSMAP 741xs CHIRP unit with a CHIRP transducer for it also. I think this will be enough on this boat. I purchased a new Yamaha F-115 and a Yamaha 9.9 HT with power tilt for the Outrage, and I think the more minimal electronics will be adequate for my use of this boat. The 741xs just hit the market and I got one of the very first ones out. It has a 7" touch screen. The limited small engine charging system should be able to support the electrical drain with this setup easily. I also got another VHF-200 radio for this boat, and it will also be NMEA 2000 networked with the GPS/Sounder. This package should make a nice setup for the inland lakes and coastal areas where it will be used.

So, wherever my Whalers go, they will not be lost, they should always know right where they are!

I moved the trolling motor battery to port, bought new 8/2 battery cable to wire it all in. This was a must do because with me, the console, cooler seat, battery, and fuel cell all on that side the boat listed slightly to starboard. I Fixed screw holes where said battery was. I also had to rewire and repair the bow light and while I had the rubrail off, I fixed where it was pulling loose in a couple of spots. I also turned the console switch panel over so my knee doesn't bump the navigation light switch every time I stand up at the helm and turn them on. I think I used a yard of solder and shrink tube on that project. Finally I mounted the fire extinguisher under the console in a better place than it was. One of those why didn't I think of this before moments. I think today needs to be a "Whaler Wednesday" to see how the refit works out.

I was able to get the 1990 225 HP Yamaha on my 1980 22' Revenge to run on the water hose a couple weekends ago. I picked up the boat in March and it has not been run in 4-5 years so I feel pretty good about salvaging the old motor. Now I need to replace the transom drain and make sure all the screw holes from old depth/fish finder brackets are sealed up. After that I'll be ready to test her out on the lake.

Well after pulling the power head off my 1999 70hp Yamaha to install an OEM trim switch and repainted my trim motor housing, I found a broke leaf spring on the left side of my trailer. I just learned that leaf springs are special order for shoreland'r trailers. They are open end slipper springs that are shorter than what the local trailer shop has in stock. But, in the process of all this, I got a keel roller mount for the stern. That will make me feel better about this bunk only trailer.

I cleaned and cleaned and cleaned. When I thought I was finished, I cleaned some more. My poor girl had "sand in the pants ((fuel tank)". Cleaned the tank and removed the deck cover over the fish locker. I think I heard the boat say thanks. What I thought was a compromised deck for the fish locker was old leaves over thirty five years in the seam. Some one left the drain plug in too long over several seasons and leaves collected. That old boat stood the test of time and deserves cleaning. She weathered it well.

Bob,
I looked up your hull for a picture (Dauntless 160 2006 Yachtworld for sale). Have you considered a rod holding transom bar that would attach at the stern (looks like existing railing might work for support). I have had no luck finding a clamp mount rod holder that could stand up to trawling that would not make me cringe for how tight I had to screw down (it would still move, scratch stainless, or casting would crack) for the horizontal stainless rails. Drift fishing or use of downrigger, no problems. Whalerbob turned me onto "C.E. Smith midmount rod holder 53610A" that mount on my vertical stainless rail support posts but it looks from the picture not many 90 degree verticals on you boat. Maybe using the fully adjustable clamping holders on your angled vertical supports.

Bob,
I was originally going to buy 4 of the CE Smith 53610a rod holders to go on my vertical rail supports. I changed my order to 2 because I had clearance at one of the areas where I could get the "adjustable mid mount" stainless rod holders to work. My electric downriggers are mounted under my top rail with very tight clearance from vertical support (hence the CE Smith). On the angled vertical support for your boat you may want to play with the 2 direction adjustable style before going CE Smith. I would guess any vertical support angle above 70 degrees would work.
Garris

ps the CE Smith is a fine looking piece of hardware

On my 5th application of tung oil for the gunwales. Nice paste working up with the sanding (using a multi tool with 400 grit designated for boat use). Truly resisting the urge for putting the stainless rails and rub rail back on. Want the gunwales dialed in before the new rigging, I do not even want to walk over it to work on the interior.

Bob,
I pine for your issue. My Whaler is getting retrofit this year. Cleaned, wired, anchor winch, jack plate, repower, gel coat repair, and other dignities. She did not and will not see action against fish this year but a deserved rest after 35 years of use and an owner that is resigned to give her a genuine rigging without stroking his own ego to get her in the water.

I stood up for the Whaler name today in defending the pleasurable time spent working on my eternal refit.
Some of our local boaters can exclusively burn gas while at the helm and jealously scoff at the time invested in my selfish pleasure.
Patience can be a rewarding virtue when working at making your Whaler "Just Right".
The secret is in the pudding and savoring the time getting there :)

http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Sea-System...fuse+block

Bought some 10/2 wire to go from the battery to fuse block on the back side of the console. 30amp inline fuse, heat shrink connections with some liquid tape.

After installing the fuse block, I was able to install a 12V power outlet (cigarette lighter style) and move my GPS off the battery terminals and onto the fuse block.

I just glued some 3/4" painted plywood to the inside of the console to mount fuse block and power supply. Wired tied everything up neatly and looks good. Nice to clean up the wiring at the battery a little.

With wire, connectors, fuses, etc. probably around $60

Well, this my first Whaler that I purchased last month (check one off the bucket list); and I was dying to put it in the water this fall. But after taking it to Bass Pro to have the engine checked for hickeys and having some work done on it, the temperature has plummeted with snow in the immediate future, So, I took the batteries out and put it in storage for the winter. Had a great conversation with the techs about caring for the engine, as this is my first power boat; I'm a former kayaker. It's going to kill me looking at pictures, reading this and other websites, and dreaming of the coming spring.

I drove the 30 miles inland on icy roads to my workshop in the country, trudged through waist high snow to open the garage door. First thing I did was walk around both Whalers to make sure nobody broke in and damaged them over the winter. All good, so checked out the 1968 custom Nauset and made a mental note to re-wire a new bilge pump in the tunnel. Then walked around the 1964 Sakonnett that got a new paint job last Spring. After promising myself to finish the restore this summer, and to then start checking out E-tec's for her re-power I headed home to shovel the driveway, yet again! On the way home decided to never spend another winter in Michigan (although that may involve a big cardboard box home under a bridge in South Florida).
Hope everyone here has a safe boating season this year. Chris

Well, it was 79 degrees here in coastal South Carolina yesterday. Still too cold to put the boat in the water. Maybe when it breaks 85. Shouldn't be long I don't think, a week or so.

Of course, we do have some crazies here, like Huckleberry, who probably goes out when it's a frigid 65 degrees.

Finished sanding RPS wood, looking not so bad after 35 years of neglect, gave one coat of stain, looks even better, varnish will start on the weekend.

Started stripping bright red paint off of sump cover and front anchor hatch, yes bright red, go figure what previous owner was thinking.

On 3/19/2015 I wen to APF Manufacturing in Hauppauge, NY to review and pick out Flexiteek flooring for the Helm, Cockpit and Swim Platforms, and Rosewood Flooring for the Cabin, for my first ever Boston Whaler, a 2015 Conquest 285. We also went over the top with a spending spree and added a Flir MD625 (thermal nightvision), two 12'' Garmin 7212 Chartplotters/Fishfinders, KVH Satellite Tracvision TV1, Garmin HD Radar... and then hit West Marine for some safety equipment and a brand new 6' fiberglass dock box... When we got home, we went online and designed our own vinyl lettering/logo for the Dock Box. Will be SUPER Excited once we get our boat delivered so everything can get installed!!!!

The new Continental EW1515V trailer came in on Friday and we picked our boat up on Saturday. Unfortunately the boat had sat out in the elements for almost 2 weeks. Some of that time was without the cover on it and the Oak trees did there job on it. % hours cleaning required to bring our baby back to show condition. The Trailer fits perfectly and it tows much better than the 17 year old original Continental. Smaller 480 X12 wheels means a little lower profile which makes it easier to get into the garage. All in all, well worth the purchase price.

Bob, I use a product called SLX, made by St. Lucie Chemical Co. I believe. All I have to do is get an old wash cloth, terry cloth material , and squeeze out some on the cloth and just wipe it on and the stain literally disappear with no scrubbing. It is a mild acid and it will let you know if you have any cuts on your hands soon. After wards I wash with regular boat soap and water, dry and then polish or wax.

In prep for our planned (but no date set as of yet) summer long trip down the Columbia and up the coast of WA and into Canadian waters I put set of bow cleats on my 2010 13' SuperSport.

I also picked up the tow line assembly for it. It includes a bridle that mounts to the stern of the tow boat plus two tow lines (one 50' and one 100') and a 6' section that will be somewhat permanently attached to the bow eye so we don't have to swim under the bow to attach a tow line.

I'm going to have the same company (Top Knot) make another bridle that will attach to the two new cleats and pass through the thimble at the front end of the 6' section. That will spread the load of the tow between three points (bow eye and two cleats).

Pulled the boat out of the shed this afternoon. Didn't pump the bulb in the fuel line and the 90hp 4-stroke Merc fire right up. I did of course have a problem with the trailer wiring (trailer wiring is such a POS), but got it fixed.

We'll head out on the Folly River tomorrow, cross the Stono River and anchor off of Little Bear Island. The wind is supposed to be 15-25 out of the ENE so will probably be a bit rough when we're exposed to the ocean. Only supposed to be in the low 70's, a bit cool for boating.

Actually, the current Whaler is the 6th one total. The three I mention on my personal page are just in the past 5 years or so.

It was a bit windy and cool today, so instead of heading to the Folly River which is exposed to the ocean in a few places, we went to the upper Ashley River. Didn't see any alligators though. Whaler did great on its first outing of the year, no issues what so ever.

Well, you fellas will all get a kick out of this one. This week, pulled my Whaler, my first, out of storage and spent a day cleaning it up for the season. Yesterday, a colleague's husband who has forgotten more about boats than I know, came over and we took it to a local lake. Put it in the water, the Merc fired up, and we blissfully headed across the lake. At the far end near the dam, a park ranger stepped out of his car replete with flashing lights and asked (told) me to return to the dock, which I did. He told me he had received complaints that a boat with a motor was on the lake and that he HAD to write me a ticket, couldn't just give me a warning and send me on my way. When I explained my ignorance (previously I had paddled this lake many times in my kayak and had boats whiz by me WITH motors) he explained that the rules had changed a couple of years ago... Too bad the lady who registered my boat at the parks administration office didn't read the boat registration that clearly stated the parameters of my 15 footer. Now I'm $45 lighter but a bit wiser. Tuition, I guess, in Boating 101.
So...words to the wise: check where you are going to go for hp/motor restrictions.
That said, cruising down the lake in my new to me Whaler was all that I hoped it would be.

Picking my whaler up from storage this afternoon after I fight the DC traffic... New Venture alluminum trailer delivered yesterday...going to switch out trailers and make the adjustments tonight then bring her home. Once home over the next couple of weeks I will reinstall all the teak (removed to oil over winter) and cusions, install newly made teak cooler cleat, new Lowrance chartplotter/depthsounder combo, install new light on T-top, new taylor made boat cover, wax and polish, put batteries back in..install new battery switch....boat has a perko dual battery switich under console that when in off position does not turn off cranking battery. I have tried to figure this out to no joy(even replaced the switch). I had been disconnecting the cranking battery while anchored and swimming as to not drain the battery from radios running. I am going to install a single switch back near the cranking battery that I can just flip on my way into the water...leaving DC in about 64 minutes to go play in traffic...

We are leaving AZ and heading back to WA tomorrow so we packed up our 1971 13' Sport to go into storage until late October. I used 3 bows to keep the covers raised so rainwater won't puddle up plus two inner tubes (from car tires). The tubes are standing on their ends and will support the covers.

The boat will be covered with a lightweight cover that is secured with straps to the frame to keep it in place. Over that will be a silver plastic tarp that is bungeed from side to side under the trailer and hull.

It'll stay that way until late October when we come back down.

Put a brand new Loadrite Elite under it. Can't give towing a try yet, as the wrong wheels are on the trailer, waiting now for the aluminum's to come in.

I am really surprised how many people have boats for sale - without trailers - the wrong trailer (rollers) or trailers that are barely road worthy. Have yet to see a used boat/trailer that had working brakes.

I have the HDS 7 Gen 3 waiting to go on the boat. I only got the one transducer so far though, side scan version.

A little frustrating - I refused to open the manual and it took me a half hour to figure out how to turn off the simulator. I sure do miss the days of the original Northstar 95* series of GPS units that needed no manual to figure everything out.

Started the lengthy and costly process of making my new to me 17 Outrage mine,
For starters got the replacement wheels and found out I have two damaged studs.
Then found spongy brakes. After bleeding brakes on my brand new trailer, a leaking master cylinder.
Added socket for another eBay score, a "local to me" Power Caster III in great shape
The boat - making it mine.
Had my wife stitch up the tears in the console cover
Repaired or replaced:
Bow and stern lights, LED's
VHF and chart plotter sounder Standard GX-2200, Lowrance HDS7 Gen 3, side scan and CHIRP transducers
Flush mount, with battery disconnect and USB Cgarge port
GAM 22 VHF antenna
Moved oil tank to console, in battery box with cutout for level
Replaced many wires
Adddd fuse block
Low voltage didconnect relay with remote switch (instead of 2nd battery)
Low profile bilge pump in live well
Recovered backrest (build up old to fit 9.5" cover)
eBay score for complete fusion set
Replaced missing RPS hinge with simple stainless Bimini parts
Replaced sun burnt gauges (Yamaha MFG's) with a miss matched non working set (originals were sun burnt)
New panel for gauges
Flag pole (small)
Found 4 screw holed under oil tank that were never sealed :-(
Sealed 3 of them, drilled a 1" + hole (whatever size the bait well plugs are) in the last to help dry it out
Replaced bulb fuel line
Re-bed Bimini attachments
Fortress anchor and new rode, with some 1/4" stainless chain I had
Started repair process of holes drilled in top of console, several chips and voids on top sides
Cleaned up a lot of the black mold
Doubled the screws on the console to deck attachment (most were loose)
Installed a Marinco battery charger I had laying around with a shore power connector
I'm sure there is more I don't recall sitting here in pain after tripping over one of the wheel chocks and landing on my elbow.

Now that I have installed a Perko switch, I finally consolidated all of my accessory circuits to one battery and have the cranking battery exclusive to the engine. I can crank the engine with battery #1 and then switch to battery #2 if it needs charging, especially on the days where I'm using the trolling motor a lot. Also, now that I have done this I don't have multiple leads stacked on the battery terminals, which from what I understand is not a good practice. After the holiday, I will shorten the engine control cable. I have about eight feet of it doubled up behind the mahogany seat clamps. By the time I'm done I will have removed five pounds worth of unnecessary wire.

I finally started "restoring" my 1965 13' Sport. I spent Sunday removing the engine, stripping the interior and then giving the boat a good scrub with Crud Cutter. Then I removed the non-factory rub rail that was attached with screws every 4" - 6". Yeah, LOTS of screw holes to repair. I removed the non-factory bow light and found it was stuck in with Marine Tex. I pulled a fiberglass cap that had been placed over the transom and that was covering the stencil number. The cap was evidently there because a previous clamped on engine had worn through the gel coat and edge of the fiberglass and caused the fiberglass on the transom to start to delaminate. So now I need to fix that, fill a BUNCH of screw holes, fix a crunched spot on the port side of the bow and then repaint. Yeah, you, I know. Gel coat is better and lasts longer. And if I had the time, facilities and extra money I'd go that way. Once I get a little further along with this project I'll look in to doing a project album.

We took our 13' Super Sport out for some exercise today. It was a beautiful day to be on the water--mid 80's, zero wind and only a few other boats on the water. We cruised a few miles up river to a dock in Richland so we could tie up then walk up to the Farmers' Market.

When we got there, this little boat was already tied up so we tied on the opposite side of the dock.

I adjusted how she rides on the trailer in preparation for the installation of the smart tabs. Previously, the bunks protruded six inches past the transom, which meant the hull was too far forward and the bunks would get in the way of the tabs. But the biggest adjustment was my raising the rollers so 90% of the weight will be supported by the keel, not on the bunks.

After three marvelous days on the water ( the seas were one foot or less..yowzer ) my wife and I took the boat out of the water. What a great time running down to Portsmouth in the Piscataqua river and up into Kennebunkport and all around. Fishing was disappointing, however , the cruising was exceptional. Now back in New Hampshire, the cleaning begins. Plenty of small mussells clogging the scuppers, and growth all under the transducer and engine housing. A good dousing of bleach and powerwashing and she is feeling better already. 3M polish all around and she is looking good.. My 115 hp Merc seems to run better every season Ive owned it. Flawless. Hope I dont jinx anything here. Petit bottom paint held up well for its second season..clean underneath..Well the summer is closing in fast up here, but the memories will remain all winter. I'm starting to make some progress on the "restoration" of my 13' Whaler. I've been working on filling screw holes from the many screws a previous owner used to hold on a rub rail. This weekend I started using Soy Gel paint remover to remove the 4 layers of paint on the interior.

Found second hand console railings for my project Montauk 17 (Thanx Dave). West marine store in town is going out of sale and they magically had 1 Moeler fuel tank white (30%) sale.(purchased) customer special ordered it and never picked it up. Also, figured out upload pic interface on this site today. Feedback over the last day or so has definitely changed my plans for re-fitting my boat... thx all.

I adjusted how she rides on the trailer in preparation for the installation of the smart tabs. But the biggest adjustment was my raising the rollers so 90% of the weight will be supported by the keel, not on the bunks.

I'm not sure if that was a good idea. The bunks are much better carrying the weight. This is not an old-fashioned boat that was built from the keel up and therefore considered the strongest part to carry the boat. This is a boat with foam sandwiched between two hull forms as you well know, therefore long bunks will get you better support than a few single point keel rollers. The boat rides and pounds on its bottom while in the water not its keel.
If the bunks are/were too long shorten them or don't pull the bow up as much and adjust the winch stand aft.

For us guys in the cold weather states this thread should be renamed, "What did you do for your Whaler this winter".

November: Shopped for Yamaha F70 repower

December: repowered 1995 15 foot Dauntless with new Yamaha F70, controls, and gauges. Saw it run in 38 degree weather only to have it winterized without any sea trial. Boy am I counting the days for spring!

January: received new windshield fabricated by UPD Plastics, (6 week wait). and ordered new Powertech SCD3 SS Prop.

Coming Soon in February: Lots of polishing, windshield installation, prop installation, and general, "Spring Commissioning".

Just finished putting the 8th coat of Pettit Flagship Varnish on all of the wood from my 1985 Montauk 17. I am looking for flush mount rod holders for the RPS, any suggestions? I purchased the boat last fall. I am planning on doing the following before putting in the water for the season...

Paint bottom blue
Adding a red stripe above the bottom paint
Either refinishing the original rod holders or replacing them with flush mounts in RPS seat
My wife baught me a bow cushion, new RPS cushion and new cooler seat cushions for Christmas from Specialty Marine- tan and brown.
Deciding what to do for a back cushion and rod holders for front of center console? Original wood and plastic with cushion from Specialty.or stainless type and new custom type cushion? Maybe use OEM from specialty and ciustomize it?
The previous owner had a small bilge in the stern that does not work anymore? Do I need one?

Any advice, suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I have the wood looking amazing and am really looking forward to showing this boat off in the Upper Niagara River this summer!,

I bought the boat new in 1981. 17' Sport. Fished hard in Lake Michigan until 1988 when I moved to Arkansas. Put the boat in the barn and didn't move it until 2 years ago when a farm project needed the space it was in. It had been covered the whole time and the cover was in good shape so I wasn't worried. When I took the cover off I discovered the pack rats, cats, coons, wasps, dirt daubers, snakes, and birds were using it for a house. All wood and wiring was destroyed. The gas tanks were rusted out. Hoses, steering cable and shift cables were chewed up. The hull was dirty but in excellent shape. The 1985 Evinrude with only 180 hours was full of rat s___. I completely stripped the hull, buffed it out, changed the tubes, filled holes. Mounted the motor on a jack plate. Rebuilt the lower unit and carbs. Added a center console and rear casting platform. Completely rewired including the motor harness. Hope to get a album put together. Sea trial went well. Motor runs fine. The bass and walleye on Bull Shoals are in trouble.

1979 Revenge V-22 Custom Twin 1996/97 155 Johnson OceanRunner Series

G&J,

For the last 3 seasons since I took ownership I have been running off external tanks and mixing manually. From what I gather the VRO pumps for the oil also are the fuel pumps. The VRO pumps are still on the engines and act as pumps from the external (or internal) tanks I have been utilizing. The boat is equipped with both of the original oil tanks, although I had the VRO lines disconnected and pugged at the motor as well as disconnected the auditory oil alarms as I know the fuel is mixed appropriately. I also disconnected the rev limiter system as it was still sensing oil shortage on my initial sea trial and the engines would not rev over +/-1500 RPM.

From what I gather the VRO side of the pumps is a VERY common failure which results in the loss of many a two stroke with oil injection from the 96-97 Johnson era, additionally the pumps are almost $500 each, wholesale, without installation. Bulk 2 stroke oil can be purchased in 5 gallon pails, so my thought/idea is to fill the tank to capacity, after pressure testing, with mixed fuel. I am still trying to come up with ideas, (and would love some input) as to how I will calculate how much oil to add before re-filling as the sending unit doesn't appear to work and the nuts attaching it to the aluminum tank are looking pretty crappy. Don't want to over or under mix, nor over fill the tank!

Any thoughts on that?

I was successful in pumping out the tank! I monitored what was coming out and in the end I had 1- 1&1/2 gal water, 4-5 gallons of mixed water/gas, then +/-17 gal of somewhat decent smelling old gas, before I reached the 6 gal I had mixed and added, came out nice and blue tint and smelled good. Everything was layered as one would expect after having the boat stationary over the winter allowing for adequate time for separation to occur. In any event I have eliminated +/- 140 lbs of weight, so if I do continue to just run external tanks I have at least lightened the load of fuel which has had uneven weight distribution in the stern (my aux tanks are under the rear bench seat and I also carried an additional 22 gallons in cans stored to the stern for a total aux capacity of 34 gal).

I am contemplating adding in 6 more gal of mixed fuel and pulling her around town on the trailer for a while to slosh it well, then pumping that out and implementing a two stage Raycore filter system to keep any foreign particles which may remain in the main tank from reaching the engines. An additional obstacle is the fact that I have the only Revenge I can find any info on that has an aluminum tank, so until it is filled, I have no idea what the capacity is. (I may be biting off more than I can chew with this whole operation but at least the tank will be flushed and empty!) Can't find the stencil # on this hull suggestions as to where to look?

Thoughts on that?

John, I found the same "foam" type padding near the sending unit and can see orange "spray" type foam at the stern end of the tank, under the hatch cover as I saw in your personal page pictures. At some point someone added a through hull port and starboard that drain from the stern most compartments into the "fish well". Gary from I believe CA, commented on the "Have you seen one like..." tread and has a shutterfly link to the restoration pictures of his 79 Revenge, his gas tank was sucked concave! (again a poly tank) Here's the link https://garys22revenge.shutterfly.com/ On WC he goes by steelhead55. He's done what appears to be a great restoration job on his boat!

It seems I am certainly putting a lot of effort a boat I am supposed to be selling! Ha Ha! Can anyone say Whaler addiction?!? ;o)

Would love to hear your thoughts and comments guys!
Jeff

Each night after dinner, for about a week, I've done little things to my 2015 150 Super Sport, which was in the water ONCE, before trailering her home and the tinkering began ...

Brand new boat. Drilled holes in the bench seat for installation of the Whaler Helm Seats. Drilled holes in the cooler for its cushion. Cut a hole in the console for a Blue Sea Systems fused switch panel. Tore out the cheap cupholders and ordered deeper stainless replacements. Glued about a dozen wire tie mounts, and screwed in a half dozen others. Added a negative bus bar and a master switch for the panel. Cut a hole in the console for depth finder cables, and for its mounting bracket. Added a dual USB charger outlet (from Blue Sea) in the hole where the 12V outlet had been, moved 12V outlet to a new hole just above the old one. Installed compass. Installed under-seat LED deck lights. Oh, caulked the gap between console and the inside wall of the boat ... something that should have been done at the factory.

Now ready for re-wiring, the right way. And the weather is about to break here along Lake Erie, so I'm right on time.

The Montauk was washed and waxed. Finally installed the cooler seat back cushions that were purchased a year ago. Relocated and raised the cooler chocks to accommodate the new 94 quart cooler with its new cushion. Upsizing the cooler from 72 to 94 quarts sure improves the forward seating and storage!

Installed a new prop and went for a test ride. Wow, with the new prop the anti-ventilation plate is riding nicely out of the water! That was not so with the old, beat up prop. I am no longer contemplating raising the engine.

After a long winters rest, I fired up and put a few more miles on my 1978 13' Sport today Amazing how those little boats make you still feel like a little kid. I shed about 30 years when I'm out in that boat.

I removed the deck on my 1983 GTX-18 so I could get a good look at the fuel lines. I think its time to replace the filler, vent and engine lines this year. I did start it in the slip and ran her for about 10 minutes. She sounded good but she's grounded until I get the new fuel hoses installed and reinstall the deck. At least the wood on that deck was still in good shape. The top of the fuel tank at the fuel pickup assembly had a interesting layer of black goop. It might have been about to spawn a new life form. :)

I wanted to know the time without pulling out my phone, I rarely wear watches. So I hit the 'net looking for dash-mount clocks that would match my existing gauges. I didn't like anything I saw. Then I found something beautiful, from a company that sells to aviators:

https://www.cumulus-soaring.com/adria...iatica.htm

These are tough, waterproof to 3 ATM, made for mounting and reading on a dash, etc. Very nice looking instruments. At a price.

I've spent a ton on my boat ... and all its accessories. But I just couldn't do the $95 for some reason. Just not convinced.

So I spent a bit less than $15 at Walmart. I can always replace it with the fancy timepiece, if I should feel compelled to do so in the future. (I probably won't)

Hey Bill that is a lot of work. I just look at my water proof Swiss watch on my left wrist, even when I'm swimming I don't have to climb back in the boat to see what time it is. Kidding aside those Italian ones look nice.

Back to the topic, I put Doel Fins on my 2008 60 HP Merc last weekend and yesterday took them back off as they really didn't improve performance as was expected and they are ugly. Whale fins on a Whaler don't look like a true Whaler.
(anybody want to buy a set of one time used genuine Doel Fins, $25.00)

I do admit I have the time on my Merc Eco gauge while underway since most of the engine data is up on my chart plotter screen. Nice to see.

So, what did I do for my whaler today?

Put ice in the cooler and I'm headed to the Spit on the north river for a few cold ones....

Stephen.

Stephen: the GPS receiver is the NMEA standard type ... but I am not yet familiar with ways to extend its use to other devices. The two I'd think about would be a Plotter/GPS and a radio with DSC for emergencies. DSC uses the GPS coordinates ...

I see a learning curve ahead regarding the multiple uses of a single GPS receiver ... they're supposed to be somewhat standardized!

Both of our 13' Whalers had Doel Fins on them when we bought the boats so we have no before/after to compare, but they sure jump up on plane quickly.

Cleaned her up this weekend after only her third winter stored outside. Both engines started right up without needing to charge the batteries, both ran good but just needed to change one thermostat. Biggest issue was the steering was frozen so took a while to pound it out and get it all clean and greased.

I spent a little over an hour sanding the wood for my console. Then it started to rain again and I had to scramble to put it back away.

Opening day is coming and I'm not seeing being ready. I have missed the opener 5 years in a row at least. Never missed the opener when I had a Striper, lol.

Had the nice folks at Barnacle Bill's in NJ do a 300 hour service on my 2012 ETEC 90 and install new throttle and shift cables. The Montauk is ready to go when the weather breaks.

Thanks! The transom repair has been easy -- better now than later ;)

The Quigley is awesome and well worth the points I spent with the Mrs to get it -- takes me and the grandsons wherever the wild winds of fortune may blow ;)

And besides ... Jeeps are for girls ;)

wont be long, will be uncovering the dauntless for the season, however, it wont be floating in the ocean all summer as in past several years. my son asked if i were keeping the boat and i mentioned it will be in the family for generations i hope. i spoke of places to boat where i havent been and he was glad i was still going to use it..and expressed interest in going..made my day..ritzy rags once posted whats after the whaler is gone..i cannot think of life without my whaler..as long as im alive its my intent to float that boat..happy motoring

Over the past few weeks to my 17' 1992 Montauk SE:

1.New/used 2002 90 Yamaha two smoke
2.I made myself a teak steering wheel center cap just like what used to come on the classic hulls.
3. Installed a Martin Marine Design swim platform to the transom. Worth the money!
4. Ordered a new windscreen from UPD plastics.

Been awhile since this thread has seen any activity, so I thought I would mention that I uncovered the 115 4 stroke merc that has been sitting for a year and do some preventive maintenance. Pulled 4 spark plugs and sprayed a good dose or WD40 in each cylinder. rotated the flywheel by hand to run the pistons around and reassembled everything. Now i will rest comfortably knowing things will be ok over the winter..happy holidays to the cult !
