Has anyone had any success in mounting a small swim platform on a 1985 Montauk? I read an earlier string that said Whaler did not reinforce the transom for a swim platform step until 1991. Yet I saw a photo in Whaler Central of one on a 1987 Montauk. Can you not do it because the transom is not solid wood or is it a matter of properly through bolting and also hitting the wood sheet on the left or right side?

If you look at my photos there is a swim step mounted on my boat. The step was origionally mountes on the Starboard side and I remounted it on the port side.
The top hand hold gets through bolted on the top rail but the lower bolts just hit air behind the skin. I used stainless toggler bolts through the skin and resealed the hull when i bolted it on. It was the same situation on both sides. My Montauk is a 1983.

I have one on my 1977 Montauk. I had it custom made. It works well.

I think as long as you through bolt it on the top your fine. I would put a over sized washer on it to spread the load a little.

There is a guy who keeps one listed on e bay that is nicely made. I do not have one and have never seen one in person. The step looks nice as it is built with a long and short side to fit the back of the 17 and come off straight. It does look a little pricey but I think a few here have bought them and say the quality is great.

Martin Marine Design. Not inexpensive but quality craftsmanship and made specifically for each Whaler model. I purchased one for my little Outrage last year and could not be more satisfied with the quality and fit.
