I'm a newbie, looking for a source for an OEM center console for my 1973 Montauk 17'. Any references are appreciated.

What happened to your console that you need to replace it?

When the engine was replaced, the new throttle body would not fit into the OEM hole, so someone simply bolted the new throttle body to the side of the console on a block of wood. The wiring and cables are all exposed now. In addition, they replaced the original console faceplate with three (3) teak planks roughly cut to fit. They hogged out a couple of holes for the gauges and let it go at that. Based on the pics you sent me, I can now replace the OEM faceplate since I know the console is original to the boat and correct for the model year. I will spend the time to mount the throttle body in the correct position when I make the new faceplate. I have the original teak surround, as well as the galley rail on top so I'm good there. I just need to make a new faceplate.

Sounds like you have a side mount engine control.
These types of consoles take a binnacle mount control.
Look at this binnacle mount. This is a dual but almost identical to the single binnacle. They are both top mounted and not side mounted.

What brand of Outboard Motor do you have?

The motor is a 2000 Evinrude E-TEC 90HP 2 Stroke. It's definitely not a binnacle mount throttle. The throttle body is about 1 1/2" wide and maybe 10" long. The neutral throttle control is a lever that lifts up on the top of the throttle body. The throttle handle is on the left side of the throttle body. It was easy to mount to the side of the console, but I'm right-handed and I definitely want to mount this on the console faceplate. Since I'm starting with a fresh faceplate I can just create a hole that will allow the top of the throttle body to protrude so I have access to the neutral throttle control lever. I'll hang a bracket on the back of the faceplate and use the existing holes in the throttle body to mount from the underside. Some cosmetic trim around the edge of the hole on top and I should be okay. It will look much closer to the OEM configuration that way.

Do you have a picture of your console? If it is indeed OEM, it will be most likely be cheaper to fix yours.

What Joe is trying to say is sell the side mount control and buy a binnacle mount it just looks and fits so much better. I tried what you are talking about which is mounting the side mount in to the console like a binnacle mount. If you are anything like me you will not be happy with the result. In my humble opinion it would be better to spend a couple of extra bucks to get the proper controls for your console. I see you are in California, if you live near the bay area I would be glad to offer some help. I am in Alameda, drop me a line.

Yes, I'm in the South Bay (San Jose)...not too far. The binnacle mount sounds like the best way to go overall. I would like to get this as close to OEM as possible, so changing the throttle makes sense.
