My 1979 V-20 Outrage has corrosion inside the fuel gauge face and the needle fell off. Outside the gauge is surprisingly clean but the screws don't want to come out and appear to have been painted in place.

I saw the link to E Components, does anyone know which model replaces the existing gauge? I assume it is a spiral gauge but would like to know for sure.

This one is round with four larger screws at the 'corners', two small screws at 6 and 12, and says Rochester Gauge Texas Inc. Dallas, USA around the bottom of the face.

This may self destruct trying to remove and I would like to have the replacement on hand before I start.

Is this the time to covert to a remote system and put the gauge on the panel?

I would take a close up photo of the face and email/call them to get the correct model #. I have no doubt they carry what you need.

I have a direct read/remote sender on my tank. I like the gauge on the panel. if you have room, consider adding it. On the contrary position a direct read is simple with no wires and gauges to mess with.

I don't know which gauge series is on my 1985 Outrage but the dial of the gauge is:

Dial No 5-62
Rochester

It appears to be:
Direct Read
Senior Dial 2 5/16"

Below is the dial from the Rochester page for the 6500 series. It shows the 5-62 dial.
Again, not sure which assembly in used on the Whalers.
I can't even see where Rochester has these dials available separately on their website.

Thank you Joe. I took a picture of mine in place, and, when blown up, I can make out DIAL NO ?.-62.

When you blow up the Rochester pdf for the 6500 Senior Series gauge it shows DIAL NO 5-62 in the photo. Appears there is a choice between gear and lever driven models.

The Sr. direct read dial 5-62 is in stock and costs 28.35. That dial is standard on the 6580 (Sr 4 bolt fuel gauge for BW).

I have what I believe to be factory 1983 steel fuel tanks in mint shape. But they have gauges in them similiar to the Rochester gauge
but the name on the gauge is Mirax Products St Louis, Mo
Dial #5-00837. The gauge works but I would like to change out as the boat is completely restored. I tried to find some info on the Mirax Company but no luck as yet. Do you know if these gauges were factory pieces?

You can order fuel gauges from them but you will get a Rochester gauge; that is who made the gauges for Mirax back then and still does today.

Just as a little note on this. My Direct Read gauge in my 1982 Newport 18 has two springs holding the gauge up and away from contact with the cup below. E-Components informed me that this is and older style and the new gauges can be installed without the springs. She stated to clean out the cup well and add a thin film of marine petroleum jelly and mount gauge directly into cup. This gauge is also made in Brass as well as aluminum.

Having been there, and done that, I cannot recommend it. They were very slow and non-responsive the last time I ordered two new gauges for my vintage MIRAX aluminum 12 gallon tanks.

The gauges eventually showed up, but were not the right length and cost a fortune. They also did not have the MIRAX logos that the originals had.

If I ever order Rochester gauges again, I will order then from Rochester or some other vendor.

I think the Rochester gauges are too large in diameter when I try to compare with the Mirax. The Rochester I believe are 2 5/8" the Mirax in my tanks are not quite 2". I'll go through the motions with both company's if I need to weld up the holes from the old units to install new that's what I will have to do. It would sure be nice to have the gauges looking new and working in the tanks. Thanks again Tom.

No, the gauges I got are exactly the same.

Rochester makes an incredible number of gauges and the ones for the portable Whaler 12 gallon tanks are not the same as the ones for the built in tanks in models like the Outrage 20, which is really the subject of this thread.

Be sure of what you order.

All you need to do is call e-components (804) 462 - 5679 Part # 6580-0051

The part comes as the entire assembly and an adjustable arm that you can just cut to length. Happy boating

Joe I posted a question to you on raising seat and console, just checking. Any links to 1974 whaler gauges as shown in my pictures , about 4 shots of the fuel gauges.
