Thanks to all for the information on this site. Very helpful.
I am wanting to upgrade the scuppers on a 1998 Dauntless 13 with TH Marine Flow-Max units. For these to fit flush on the transom, I need to remove the outside ring of the existing drain (see picture). Any comments on the best approach to doing this?
Initial Questions
- How is the factory drain mounted (5200, epoxy, ???)?
- Is this outer ring part of the flapper valve assembly or part of the drain tube itself?
- Can the outside ring be removed, leaving the drain tube intact?
- Any hints on removing the ring or the whole drain, if necessary?
- If the entire drain has to be removed, what is the best way to install a new one that fits flush to the transom so the Flow-Max can be mounted?

I am sure that someone else will know more about this than me but I will share what I know. I bought a set of scuppers from Twin City for my project hull. The inside portion is the tube that is molded to the inner ring. The outside of the unit is a flange with a flapper that you can change by pulling one screw out. The out side and inside are a male and female type assembly that snaps together. I am sure there is marine sealant around each flange but I do not know it would be 5200. The thing is the scupper you want to install will just have to be put on over the top of the existing flange. I would think you would want to try to flatten the top of the flange a bit by sanding and then put the new scupper over it. I did the same thing to My 17 edge water but still ended up with a gap between the new scupper and the hull that I had to fill with sealant. I do not know how much water you are getting into the back of the boat but You may be better off replacing the rubber on your current set up. On my Edge water the scuppers are actually below the water line a tad and when the boat is heavy in the stern I still get water past the ball scuppers. If my drains were closer to the floor level of the boat I would not have the water intrusion. When do you find water coming in and how much water do you have on the deck?

If it's just me (160 lbs.) there isn't much water. With a 250 lb. fishing buddy on board, it can be a substantial amount.

Have you changed the rubber flapper yet? I only ask because Like I said above if the scuppers are being pushed under water The balls are not going to seal either. Although I do think they did slow the water down they did not stop all the water intrusion. I am sure you are like me and by now must think any thing that could make it some what better would be welcomed.

From what I have read scuppers with flaps or balls are a pain in the ....
The one recommendation posted is, which ever model you choose, pick one that allows the flap or ball to be changed without having to remove the complete through hull.

I had the same problem and tried different flaps ans ball stops. Nothing realy worked well and in the winter time it was cold. The solution I came up with was I went by a kayak place and they sale foam plugs with a bungy attached . Just plugged it from the inside and kept dry . In case of an emergency you could yank them out and drain any water. East Ten. does not have to many big waves any way. BG

So I went the plug route. Made a bigger version of a standard drain plug. I had some old 1" drain plugs laying around and I picked up some #8 rubber stoppers with a hole in the middle. Drilled out the hole in the stopper to make it bigger. Assembled and installed. Done! Thanks to all for the comments and suggestions.
