I recently purchased a Whaler. The previous owner said that it was a '74 Montauk. I located the HIN in the forward storage compartment and it is 3798. According to the HIN listed on continuouswave.com, it appears to have been manufactured between 1961 and 1962. We are questioning the model and the year. Basically all we know that it is a 17' boat. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What does the metal tag on the stern end with?
also, you should contact Chuck Bennett at whaler. He is, and will be a great help for you to track any info related to your whaler.

There is no metal tag on the stern. I'm guessing that it was probably lost / removed some time in the past. I'll send Chuck an email about it.
Thanks for the information.

Post a picture of the bow area of the boat. Does it have a wooden console or fiberglass? The early models had a smaller front bow locker.

It has a wooden console. The console is missing the windshield, but as far as I can tell, the lower portion is original. The console has had several repairs over the years as well as several coats of paint and is in pretty rough shape. It does still have the original Morse control however. The hull is in good shape considering it's age. There appear to be no major structural problems, just mostly cosmetic issues.
According to Chuck Bennett, based on the hull number, it is probably a late '61 or early '62.
I'll post some pictures soon.

Here is a picture of the console, apparently missing the wind screen, and coated with many layers of paint:

Here is a picture of the stenciled hull number 3798, probably a late '61 or early '62. When I told my nephew that I bought an old Whaler, he said: "The older, the better." Apparently I got the best.
I hope to take her out this weekend.
