What length should control cables be on a 1989-90 Boston Whaler Outrage with Twin Yamaha 70 motors? The ones on my boat are 18 and 20 -- I have a feeling that they were used because the installer didn't have shorter ones on hand and wanted to finish faster.

WhalerDan,
The single engine I have uses 18 foot cables.
I also use 18' cables for the kicker on the port side but that might be able to accept 19' cables.
I am not sure which side of the engine the Yamaha has the connections on. The OMC connections are on the Starboard side of the motor.
Are your cables too long now?
They should have some slack. If they look like they can be a foot shorter, then disconnect yours and put a piece of tape a foot shorter and hold it up where it should connect and see how it looks to you.

Yes, my Yamaha cables connect to starboard side of motor. I think my cables could be shorter. My mechanic said they're very long.

Don't know if this photo will help you.

All of my cables are 18' long.
As said above, the kicker, which is in about the same position as your port motor, has 18' cables but could probably be 19' to give it a little more slack.
You certainly do not want the cables too short to cause a bind when you turn the engine from lock to lock.

I rigged my 18 with twins, and have the factory recommended cable lengths, which I used, in my files at home. I want to say they were 17 & 19'. I'll confirm. With starboard engine entry, you might consider 16 & 18. Ssince you have 18 already, see if those will work on the port engine, then you know you need a set of 16's..
If you are doing a twin installation, you should see this article, particularly with respect to the hydraulic steering.

According to my records, the factory twin mechanical steering cables on an 18 Outrage were 15.5 feet.
For hydraulic steering, 18' is used for hose length.
