Hello.
Has anyone installed a fuel level sending unit to a Moeller 26 gal above deck tank?

I have a 87 17' Montauk and have purchased a set of teleflex gauges which included a fuel gauge. I have the perfect spot for the gauge but don't know if I will be able to use it.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Joe

Found this original thread that nobody replied to, but I have the exact same question....is it possible to put a remote gauge on an above deck tank? I just bought a Moeller 26 Gallon for my Montauk, Seeing the gauge on the tank is impossible with it under the seat.

Any suggestions?

The sending unit is available from Moeller http://www.moellermarine.com/amdownlo...l_sending/
There is also a pdf of the install instructions linked on that page which we may want to add to the downloads section of Whaler Central

That information is helpful, but if there isn't an existing sending unit, how would one go about creating the hole necessary? Also, is it safe to do so? I see they have threaded bolts that would screw it into the top of the tank, without nuts on the inside of the plastic, how does this stay down? Do you use Stainless Lag Screws into the plastic?

If anyone has done this with a tank, please let me know. I get nervous about leaks and risk of spark/fire.

Guys,

I have been reseaching this since last season, I may have written that original post...:o

I have a 28 Gal tempo tank in a 17 SS limited. A bit cumbersome to check fuel status since the tank is under a deck that opens behind the seat. I add a gauge last season.

I found 2 options. Frist option offers a backing plate specifically for a plastic tank. They call this a "hole under ring"

The second option is for the sender only but I believe the under ring will work with this. This option is repairable with out taking it completely apart. Over the years I have had to do this several time on other boats and it can be a giant pain if the tank hard to get to.

I have ordered the rings and the ebay offering.

As far as cutting the hole.. this will be tricky. I do not want to get the plastic filings in the tank. I will use a combination of a dremel and very sharp knife when getting close to breaking through the tank. Then I will use the knife to finish. When drilling holes I place a small piece of tape underneath to catch fillings. If I take my time I sure this will out. Of course the tank will be empty... I will install over the next few weeks.

Will keep you posted...B)
