Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Important news about Personal Pages !

Good news and bad news.

The bad news.
Personal Pages are going away. They have gotten out of control with links to PhotoBucket etc... It was never our intention to have photo links posted to any outside source in this section. We had always intended for people to upload photos to WhalerCentral so the photo links would never be broken due to no fault of our own.
The photo limit was always 20 but due to people linking to outside photo hosting services, several people have 50 to 60 photos linked in their personal page that take forever to load.
The Personal Pages are turned off as of now so no new Personal Pages can be made or edited at this time. You still can view the existing personal pages at this time.

The good news.
We will be creating a new "Members Photo Album" section where people can upload photos directly to WhalerCentral and their photo album. There will be NO outside linking to photos.
You will be allowed 20 photos max in your album and you will be able to change them anytime you like with newer versions etc....

More good news....
In the following weeks (or months), Mike and I will be upgrading the site software to a newer version.
Most everything will remain the same with the exception of a few new features that you will just have to wait to see.
This is pretty much a major upgrade and Mike and I have been working on this for several weeks already. Lots of code changes on just about every side and center panel that we have been using the last several years..... This already has been a lot of work...

We think you are going to enjoy the new features of the upcoming site upgrade. We know we already do from an administrative point of view.

Thanks for the update Joe, will the photo size still be restricted? Ie will we have to resize our photos to upload them? This is where I always seem to have an issue and give up.

Joe,

Happy Birthday!!!

I totally agree that whatever direction you chose will be best for all of us. Thanks for spending the time and effort to make this site so amazing.

I have learned so much in the past year or so thanks completely to this website.

I'm glad we'll still be able to post photos of our boats as that is one of the coolest features on this site for me. Additionally, with members posting photos of works in prgress, they serve as valuable tools for the rest of us.

Thanks Joe.

Thanks guys for all of your hard work to continue improving Whaler Central. :D
My personal pages were due for some reorganization anyway.
Good luck with the software upgrade. I'm anxious to see what new features you have in store for us.

The new "Members Photo Albums" won't be a whole lot different except that everyone will have to upload the photo... No more linking to Photobucket or other outside sources.

We are working on auto resize for some of you that are having problems making your photos small enough to upload. This should help you.

The new "Members Photo Albums" will be very similar to the Whaler Model Specifications albums.
http://www.whalercentral.com/userphot...allery.php
Each album will be a members album with up to 20 photos and their descriptions and comments.
Each photo when clicked on will get larger... Up to 960x720 in size or something similar as we haven't come up with a definite size yet...
Click on this link and then click on the photo. You will get the idea..
http://www.whalercentral.com/userphot...photo_id=3

More to come but we aren't telling yet............ :o

Looking forward to the new features. You all do such a great service to Whaler owners! I remember the mention of disabling all links to outside servers. Is this going to be the case for forums as well or can we still point to pictures hosted off sight in discussion area?

Some changes have started.

You will notice minor changes as we go along until the big one which might be sooner than expected.

At this time you can still view your Personal Pages but you cannot edit them.
Even after we upgrade the site, the new "Members Photo Albums" will be down for awhile until we can manipulate the software to get this feature working the way we want.

This site and it's member's have helped me fix my boat "MYSELF" Numerous times, I had some issues with steering and over heating this year that would have taken me "out of the game" for the season. This site is great because, we can "Learn" from each other, and also see each other's boat's with pictures. Everyone treat's other whaler owner's "boat problem's" as if they were their own, member's and staff are fantastic because, they stick w/you while you are fixing the problem. No question is "Stupid" here, and "Newbies" are handled "Gently" because, we ALL remember when we were there (with no W/C for support).
Thank's to all !

Joe,
If our personal page has uploaded pictures and not links, is it possible to save them to the new members photo album or will they have to be uploaded again? Due to a computer crash, I no longer have the restoration pictures of my Whaler that was used to create my personal page. Thanks!

jlh,

We won't lose the photos.
However, you would do yourself some good if you open up your personal page and then save all of the photos you have in there back to your desktop.
This way you will also have a copy of the photos back on your computer.

We have decided to keep the Personal Pages at this time.

However, because of the recent site software upgrade, we need to change a lot of code in the Personal Pages to get it working properly. At this time, you cannot "Edit" your personal page. We are working on this.

We will keep everyone informed on our progress.

I think we now have the Personal Pages working again.

Things are looking great Joe,

My personal page is one of those with a bunch of pics - Currently it shows this at the bottom of each page....

otice: Undefined index: 052 in /home/jkriz18/public_html/infusions/personal_page/pp_functions.php on line 160

Notice: Undefined index: 053 in /home/jkriz18/public_html/infusions/personal_page/pp_functions.php on line 160

Should I be concerned with this? Do you need me to narrow down my page size? I dont want to cause work or issues so let me know.

Thanks again for all the hard work.
Scott

One word for everyone that has a Personal Page...

Only 20 photos allowed.

We would prefer that the photos are uploaded to WhalerCentral and NO outside photo linking please.

We will be going through the personal pages soon and deleting photos for the members that have over 20 in their personal page linked to outside sources.
So, for those of you that have over 20, please start going through your photos and deleting the ones you don't want.

Thanks

Here's a list of people that need to remove some photos.

http://www.whalercentral.com/viewpage...page_id=53
If you have more than 20 photos please cut them down to size....

Everyone can put links to photos that are uploaded elsewhere. That is no problem. We really don't want more than 20 photos in an album because the personal pages would take much longer to load with much more than that.

Thanks

Im down to 14 pics now.... Still linked offsite - I have trouble with the resizing deal. My avatar should be proof of that.... took me forever and I cut the front of my boat off...lol

Scott,

As long as you have 20 or less for now... That is fine....
Until you figure out how to resize them...

You say you have a Mac.
I use PhotoExpress. You can get it in the Personal Page Making 101 thread here:
http://www.whalercentral.com/forum/vi...ead_id=120
Download it and give it a try.

There are only a few people left that have more than 20 photos in their Personal Page...

Scroll down this page and see if you are over the limit.

For those of you that still show more than 20, please edit your page as soon as possible...

Thanks for your co-operation

Good news.

Everyone on the Personal Page list now has 20 photos or less.
At this time, this is the amount of photos you are allowed. 20
We may change this in the near future but we have work to do before we commit to anything else.

IMPORTANT.......
Please.... NO more linking to outside photo sources for your images in your personal page.
Please upload all your photos for the Personal Page using the upload images feature.
For those of you that do have photos linked to outside images, don't worry about it at this time. However, when we redo the Personal Page section, all of the outside links will be wiped out. We will let you know in advance before this happens.
So, if you want to show your photos on WhalerCentral through your personal page, upload them using the "upload images" link in the personal page section. If you need help, read this tutorial.

Mike and I are going to be doing some extensive reworking of all the photo sections over the winter months.
As you already know, we have several photo album pages hosted here on WhalerCentral.

1. Project Gallery Albums
http://www.whalercentral.com/photogal...allery.php

2. Parts Photo Albums
http://www.whalercentral.com/photogal...album_id=1

3. Whaler Model Albums
http://www.whalercentral.com/userphot...allery.php

4. Members Photo Albums (this is one of the ones we are and will be working on)
http://www.whalercentral.com/userphot...lery_2.php

5. We will also be working on another brand new type of Photo Album.
(no link at this time)

6. We also have photo attachments in the discussion area.
You can attach a photo and upload it to WhalerCentral using this feature.
Again, we prefer NOT to have any photos linked to outside sources in the forums either... However, we do realize that for some photos this may be necessary due to many different reasons.
If you have a photo you want to share or need to make a point, use the attachment feature instead of pointing to your PhotoBucket or other outside source...

Last but not least, when you wish to create a Project Gallery Album, just let us know via a post in the discussion area. We can then create an album for you and you can start submitting your photos to your project album via the "Submit Photo" link on the left sidebar.
Here is one example of what a project gallery album looks like.
Erik Selis' 13' Project
Once you get a project gallery album started, you can also start a discussion thread an link to photos in your gallery there.
This is what the discussion thread looks like for Erik's project.
http://www.whalercentral.com/forum/vi...rowstart=0
Lots of exposure and lots of interest is generated from members projects like this.
There are many more albums in the project gallery so you might want to take a look.

Thanks for everyone's co-operation in this matter.

Everyone,

PLEASE do NOT delete your personal page... Just make sure the photos are uploaded to WhalerCentral...

There is no rush to do this. Do a photo or two at a time.

We are working on a way that new photos cannot be linked outside for the personal pages but this will take us time.
We will be working on this over the winter so you have plenty of time.

We have added the new Personal Page "Rules" in the personal page section:
http://www.whalercentral.com/infusion...page=rules

We have also added the same rules to the Personal Page FAQ section:
http://www.whalercentral.com/faq.php?...p?cat_id=1

We would like all members creating new pages or adding photos to existing personal pages to pay particular attention to the statement about "PLEASE do NOT link to outside photo hosting services like Photo Bucket or Image Shack, etc.."

We are doing this for the future of WhalerCentral.com as we have no control over outside photo hosting services. These services could quit at anytime which is beyond our control and would obviously cause all photos hosted by them to disappear.
We are protecting our future by not allowing the linking of photos in the personal page section.
I'm sure everyone can understand our policy.
Thanks for your understanding and co-operation.

Update;

We have been going through all of the personal pages looking for broken links and any photos that were pointing to outside photo hosting services.

We think all of the broken links are now fixed and there are no outside hosted photos.
Obviously we could have missed a few but hopefully not.

All updated pages and any new pages will be checked for any problems.
There are now 465 personal pages. You can view them all here:
http://www.whalercentral.com/viewpage...page_id=53

For some reason, some of you decided to delete your personal page because of our policy on photos.
All we can say is if that's the way you want to react, then so be it. We are however a little disappointed that you have chosen
not to upload your photos to WhalerCentral and not to share them with us.

Thanks again to everyone that has a personal page for their co-operation in this matter.

Another Update to Personal Pages.

We have reorganized the Personal Page section slightly.
We now have separate input for "Year", "Model", and "Length".

When viewing the Personal Page list, you can now click on the "Length" at the top of the page and view all the various models by "Length" category.
http://www.whalercentral.com/viewpage...page_id=65

We still have a little more work to do on the new page but it shows most of the lengths of models.

We hope you all enjoy this new feature.

Tried the 'length' deal Joe but it told me I didn't have permissionto view the page.

Bob,

Yes, your mother called me last night and said you have been a bad boy... :D

Thanks for the heads up.
I had it turned on so only the Admins could view the page until we got it working properly.
I have now turned it on so anyone and everyone can view that page.

Great feature Joe. I just updated mine. Is there any way that you could place an icon of section on the site so it can be easily accessable? :o

ioptfm,

Glad you updated and added the year of your Whaler in the 'year box'.
We hope everyone will update their page and put the year of their model in the box.

We have also just added another link at the top of the page for "Models".
You can now view the Personal Page section by 'Models' or by 'Length'.
The Models and Length link is highlighted at the top in blue now.
http://www.whalercentral.com/viewpage...page_id=53

For the Model section:
Use the full name of the model, examples:
Montauk
Nauset
Sport
Super Sport
Super Sport Limited
130 Sport
150 Montauk
190 Outrage
230 Conquest
etc., etc...

For the Year section:
Use the 4 digit year, examples:
1965
1987
2000
2008
etc., etc... Please do not use a 2 digit year like 68 or 02 .......

For the Length section:
Use the 2 digit Length, examples:
15
17
19
25
etc., etc...

A lot of new people have been creating Personal Pages.
We hope more members start using this feature.

At this time, 20 photos is the limit.
If you reach your limit, then you are going to have to delete some of the earlier photos before you can upload new ones.
Again, there is no longer any linking to outside photo hosting services like Photo Bucket or Image Shack, etc... Upload your photos directly to WhalerCentral.

Thanks and Enjoy...

I think Joe has a sideline business going,

Joe, if you talk to my mom who passed away in 2002 as well, let me know I have a few questions to ask. Simple things really, like where are the spare keys for the outside storage rooms at the house.
