Is the weight of the 90 Optimax engine OK for a 1989 Montauk. What is the proper size and pitch propeller with this engine for a Montauk 17. Is a 20" long shaft correct. I am about to repower the boat and I was not able to find this information.

I appreciate the help.

montauk17,

You have chosen the heaviest engine of the bunch.
I made a 'Quick Reference Guide' for engine choices and the weights for various Whalers.
Check out the QRG for Montauks here on this site:

The Long Shaft is the correct shaft length... 20 inches...

I have a 1989 Montauk 17 w/ the original 90hp 2 stroke Johnson. I will be re-powering this summer.
Please give me your experienced choices of engines.
Suggestions from some from the North Carolina area;
- 90 Yamaha two stroke.
- 100 Yamaha four stroke.
- 115 Yamaha two stroke.
- 90 Johnson/Evinrude E-Tec.
- Susuki 90 four stroke.

I would appreciate to hear what you have found out that works best.

Many thanks!

What motor did you settle on when you repowered and can you add performance numbers and whether or not you feel you made the right choice?
