I came across an original 1968 Nauset that was rotting away in a boat house and had to have it. Now I'm in love with this boat and have been doing my best to restore as original. everything was there (most parts had been replaced but the old ones were in a box behind the barn. And the console had rotted away.

I have built a new one to spec and have refurbished the morse control and Nautalloy steering wheel, but... does anyone know if or what original gauges may have come with the 1968 and what manufacturer? And the positioning? It has what looks to be an original compass centered on top and it cleaned up nicely. Gauges are the last piece I haven't been able to find info on and I want to do it correctly.

Thank you!

They did not come with any motors or gauges.
Left up to the buyer.

Many other parts were optional like a compass etc.

The motors were options like:

Bearcat
Mercury Tower of Power
Evinrude/Johnson
etc. and in different HP.

Do you have the optional Ritchie compass?

What types of gauges are you considering?
Tach?
other?

Here are a few examples of OMC (Evinrude/Johnson) back in the day.

Not sure what brand to suggest for you but other members here maybe able to let you know what they used on that particular motor if you are using the Bearcat.

It originally had the tower of power on it I think, with the red mercury spell out. It has an old merc control and rpm gauge as well but not 1968 era - 80's I think. For this summer to get out I put on my rebuilt 2004 mercury ELPTO but dont want to cut holes in new mahogany till I research what would have been there or optioned because eventually I hope to rebuild a Tower and get it back on.

quick random question for when I get to hull: The BW Logo on hull outside stern looks black, but I thought they were red in 1968. any info? Also, there are small teak blocks for a bimini that look original. was a bimini an option way back in 1968?

It like archeology trying to remove layers of stuff added over the years and get back to the original boat. I love the old Nautalloy wheel. I remember in the 70's we used to wrap them with leather used for splicing lines.

Thanks for the help, and the site Joe.

Have you downloaded the console drawings for Nauset/Sakonnet/Eastport from our Download section?
https://www.whalercentral.com/downloa...?cat_id=13

It shows the size of the gauge panel.
You could always make a new panel if you want to change position of gauges etc.

Just a thought.
