Re-finishing the center console on my 1971 Nauset.
have stripped the old vanish off and prepped the console fully to the original wood -
it appears to have marine ply and mahogany through (mahogany on the finishes and MP on much of everything else.
Should I stain the CC before varnish? to get uniformity of color etc? or is it traditionally just a varnish coat? (it did not appear to have a stain on it previously)
I have also heard about wood penetrating apex coats for further protection?
any guidance on either?

I am also refinishing a
1971 Sakonnet and I will only varnish and sand lightly between coats. No stain.
(changed to full 4 digit year per guideline #1 at the top of this page)
