Hola All,

I'm happy to be here, which is to say I am delighted to own a rare Whaler, a 1991 16 SL.

This boat is in solid shape and already seaworthy, with trim tabs added by the previous owner to compensate for the notorious stability issues on this model. I should add I really thought about getting a Montauk and didn't even know about the existence of the SL until I saw a local add posted in my area. As I have two small kids, I love that I can keep them in front of me "strapped in" to their own seats. Beyond that, I mostly use the boat to cruise and do water sports; fishing not a high priority. So, the "ski locker" aspect for me is great.

The only downside at this point is acquiring original parts for this boat. In my searches for manuals or parts, it's almost like this boat doesn't exist, which is too bad.

Regarding this post, it's clear to me I'd be doing myself a favor to replace the steering system on this boat. Despite growing up working at a marina and owning sail boats, this is my first power boat and not something I have experience with. This past spring, the helm locked up on me over the winter, but I was able to pull out the steering cable and brush out enough rust to make things go for this season. Popping off the center cap on the steering wheel also reveals a nut and shaft so corroded and rusted I know it will be no small feat to pull of the (splitting) steering wheel.

So my question is this: does anyone have any suggestions on what a proper replacement steering system could be for this boat given I cannot simply order replacement parts to spec. from a Whaler dealer? Ideally looking for non feed back system too, but not overly picky.

Thanks kindly, hope all are enjoying the season.

Sincerely,

A Man with a Mr. Snuffleupagus Whaler

To remove the wheel, you will need a wheel puller.

The helm (hardware thingy behind the console) and the cable can be purchased seperately or in a kit.

For engines under 150hp, you should opt for no-feedback (NFB) with 3 turns lock-to-lock.

The cable can be removed from the helm by pulling a pin in the helm.

Measure the cable and that tells you which one to buy.

They are not that rare of a boat, they just don't have the following or resale of other models. The cable might come out with a pin as Phil mentioned or it might just unscrew as you turn the wheel, like a power antenna on a car. If wheel is plastic and split, may be easier to just cut the 3/4" shaft with a cutting wheel and replace everything. The helm might be too tight for a rack & pinion style so measure everything before buying.
