I have determined the service life of the transom eye bolts to be 41 years. The port side transom eye bolt corroded and snapped. Luckily I was not pulling a skier AND was able recover both the tow eye and lift eye. I have new studs coming from Specialty Marine. Is there any advice on installation that you can share? Should i use Locktite? Should i coat the stud and hole with sealant/silicone? What is the best way to ensure the inboard lifting eye is vertical when the job is done?
Thanks for any input.
Best - John

At the least, coat the entire hole with a marine sealant, not silicone.

Locktite is not needed.

As for lining up the inside eye, it is dependent on the position of the rod in the exterior eye.

You might have a problem. I do not think the stud from specialty is the same thread as the OEM. Did you confirm with them first?

Thanks biggiefl, I checked and they said they should fit. I will find out for certain tomorrow they arrive.

the stud ended up fitting thread-wise but was a about 3/8" too long. i ended up using loctite since the eyes spun freely on the new stud (i.e. not enough friction for my liking). I coated the hole with marine sealant. I think it is ready for the next 40 years!

If I understand what I am reading, the threaded rod that joins the two eyes is too long.

If that is accurate, I would remove the fittings, cut the rod shorter. A hacksaw is all that is needed.

Locktite is a bandaid.
